CASE STUDY (MEDC) TOURISM IN ICELAND

Iceland (MEDC) Much of Iceland is still taking shape before your very eyes – raw, dramatic landscapes born from volcanic eruptions and carved out by glaciers. Other parts have hardly changed since the first Viking settlers saw them more than 1,100 years ago.

Iceland (MEDC) Tourism in Iceland has become a more significant part of the national economy. The tourism industry was estimated to contribute to 4.1% of the country's GNP as of In 2010, 500,000 tourists visited Iceland.

Iceland (MEDC) Tourism to Iceland has grown steadily since the 1990s. In 2000, the annual number of visitors exceeded the total resident population for the first time (approx 276,000). Since then, tourism has grown by about 11% on average each year. Some 360,000 people visited Iceland in 2004, compared with 485,000 in 2007 and over 500,000 in 2008.

What can you do in Iceland?

Task Two Read page 76 of the textbook and answer the following questions: 1.How many tourists visit Iceland every year? 2.What way does tourism contribute to the economy? 3.What opportunities does tourism present? 4.What are the problems/negatives of tourism in Iceland? 5.What is the ‘Golden Circle’? Answer Questions 1, 2a, 2b, 2c and 3. Using the graph answer the following question – Describe the main leisure activities of tourists in Iceland (3 marks)

Task Three In pairs, think of ways Iceland could promote sustainable tourism. REMEMBER: Sustainable Tourism is tourism that minimises the costs (negatives) and maximises the benefits of tourism for natural environments and local communities, and can be carried out indefinitely without harming the resources on which it depends.

Task Four Read through the photocopied notes on Sustainable tourism in Iceland. Answer the following question: For a tourist region you have studied, describe the strategies used to move towards a more sustainable form of tourism (8 marks)
