EQ: How did states ’ rights have an impact on Georgia and the beginning of the Civil War? PT: *What conditions caused the North to develop an economic base different from the South? *Why were Northern cities larger and more populated than Southern cities? Write

A Nation Comes Apart - Economic Differences: - early 1800s the North & South had different economies due to environmental factors Northern states - turn to industry with the invention of the steam engine & factory system North – the rocky soil & cold climate meant farming could not be used as a main source of income Write

- Advantages for Northern industry Write -Swift rivers provided power to run the mills and factories - natural harbors made foreign trade possible

South had a warmer climate & fertile soil allowing the creation of an agrarian (agricultural) economy Write Picture retrieved from: JPG

Southern Economy tobacco, cotton, corn, rice, & indigo were the first cash crops for the South The invention of the cotton gin allowed cotton to become the primary cash crop Slavery was a key component for the success of large scale crop production.

North’s Industrial Economy Write -Led to growth of cities -Large exports of finished goods diversification of commerce

- Effects of Industrialization Write -people became interdependent for survival example: a butcher provided meat to his customers -citizens demanded more from government such as police and fire departments

Effects of Agricultural Economy Write -self-supportive; independent Example: raised own food - did not want government involvement -relied heavily on importing finished products from North and outside countries.

Dividing Forces Write Missouri Compromise Compromise of 1850 State’s rights Popular Sovereignty 1860 presidential election slavery

This sectional approach to national policy was evident on the issues of: - tariffs - state rights - settling the West - slavery Write
