CBC AUTOMOTIVE HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS and APPLY DEVICES n Chapter 5 n Page 93 n Classroom Manual
CBC AUTOMOTIVE LAWS of HYDRAULICS n All hydraulic systems have a liquid, pump, lines, control valves, and a output device. n Hydraulics is the study of liquids in motion. n Liquids will conform to the shape of their container. n Liquids will react predictably to pressure exerted on them. Page 94
CBC AUTOMOTIVE PASCAL’S LAW n Pressure is equal in all areas of a sealed hydraulic system. n Hydraulics can be used to increase the force available to do work. Page 95
CBC AUTOMOTIVE FLUID CHARACTERISTICS n Any leak will decrease pressure. n Liquids have no shape of their own. n Liquids seek a common level. n Liquids are incompressable. Page 96
CBC AUTOMOTIVE MECANICAL ADVANATAGE n Hydraulics do work in the same way as a gear or lever. n Force x Distance = Work n Increase force = Reduced distance. n Decrease force = Increased distance.
CBC AUTOMOTIVE AUTOMATIC TRANS APPLICATIONS n Fluid is used to apply bands and clutches. n Servos are used to apply bands. n Holding power is determined by band type and pressure applied. n A servo multiplies force through hydraulic action. Page 97
CBC AUTOMOTIVE FLUIDFLUID n All hydraulic systems use a fluid to perform work. n All domestic manufactures require a petroleum-based fluid. n Some import manufactures require the use of a synthetic fluid. n ATF is dyed clear red, and darken when burnt, or become milky when contaminated by water. Page 97
CBC AUTOMOTIVE FLUID ADDITIVES n Zinc, phosphorus, and sulfur are commonly added to reduce friction. n Detergent additives, keep the parts clean. n Dispersants keep contaminants suspended so they can be trapped by the filter. n ATF is subjected to many tests, oxidation resistance, corrosion and rust inhibition, flash and flame points, and resistance to foaming. Page 97
CBC AUTOMOTIVE FLUID REACTIONS n Chemicals in fluids may react with seals. n Fluids are tested for compatibility with a specific transmission. n Incompatibility can result in swelling or shrinking seals. n ATF is also tested for the ability to mix with other brands.
CBC AUTOMOTIVE RECOMMENDED APPLICATIONS n There are several types of ATF. n Fluid types include A, CJ, H, Dextron, and Mercon. n Types F and G do not contain friction modifiers. Page 98
CBC AUTOMOTIVE FILTERINGFILTERING n Filters trap dirt and particles. n Untapped particles can cause sticking valves and premature wear. n Deep pans will have a unique filter. n Three types of filter media screen, paper, felt. n Secondary filters for pumps, governors, ect. Page 99
CBC AUTOMOTIVE TRANS OIL FILTER Page 99
CBC AUTOMOTIVE RESERVOIRRESERVOIR n Reservoir is the oil pan. n Oil is drawn from the pan and returned after being circulated through the selected circuits. n Level must be maintained to prevent aeration. n All transmissions must have a vent to allow air movement in and out of the trans. Page 100

CBC AUTOMOTIVE TRANS COOLERS n Keeping the ATF cool ensures that it will be able to adequately lubricate and cool the transmission. n The trans cooler dissipates heat into the air stream flowing though the radiator. n Return oil is lube oil in most trans’s. Page 100

CBC AUTOMOTIVE OIL PUMPS n The oil pump provides circulation and pressure. n Oil pump is driven by hub of the torque converter. n Three types of pumps gear, rotor, vane. n Vane type is variable displacement. Page 101
