X-Ray cassettes 3rd Lecture Alhanouf Alshedi Email: aalshedi@ksu.edu.sa

X-Ray Cassettes X-ray cassettes are rigid film holder used to transport film for use without exposing the film to room light . The front of the cassette is made of a radiolucent material with low absorption characteristics. Most cassettes have a lead backside to prevent back scatter radiation from reaching the film.

X-Ray cassette construction

Cassette Function Hold and protect intensifying screens. To exclude all light from entering the cassette and fogging the film. To maintain close and uniform contact between film and screen. To exclude dust and dirt from

Type of the cassette Double -screen cassette (most common available ) Single –screen cassette (used with single emulsion film like mammography) Curved cassette used with inter -condylar position of knee joint and for panoramic view of the mandible.

Features of the ideal cassettes - Strong and rigid to avoid wear and tear - Lightweight to facilitate carrying - Easy to open and close - No sharp edge - Able to provide good film screen contact when closed.

Care of cassette: Do not scratch at any surface. Do not make the screen wet. Record the date of cleaning. Hold it gently Store in standing position and do not store cassette near sources of heat. Don’t leave the cassette open. Ensure the screen is fully dry before reloading the cassette.
