7-4 SQUARE ROOTS ALGEBRA 1 CP OBJECTIVE: FIND AND USE SQUARE ROOTS.

WARM UP What is the value of 2 2 ? 5 2 ? 7 2 ? Find the area of a square that has a width of 3.

SQUARE ROOT If a 2 = b, then a is a square root of b. Ex: 4 2 = 16 and ( - 4 ) 2 = 16, so 4 and –4 are square roots of 16. The expression means the principal (or positive) square root of 16. The expression means the negative square root of 16. You can use the symbol + to indicate both square roots.

SIMPLIFY EACH EXPRESSION a. d. b. e. c.

TRY ON YOUR OWN… a.c. b.d.

PERFECT SQUARES The squares of integers are called perfect squares.

ESTIMATION Between what two consecutive numbers is ?

USING A CALCULATOR Find to the nearest hundredth.
