Spelling Pasco-Hernando Community College Tutorial Series

Vocabulary – Spelling These are the vocabulary words for this lesson. Read through carefully and print out if possible. Don't be overwhelmed. The information will be repeated throughout the module, and there will be practice exercises.

Vocabulary - Spelling proper noun - a noun (person, place, or thing) which is a name. quotation marks - quotation marks are the symbols that are used around quotations. They show that the words enclosed in the quotation marks are someone else's other than the author of what we're reading. Quotation marks are double: "quotation marks." Single quotation marks are the single version: 'single quotation marks.' They are only used when you have to use quotation marks inside quotation marks. There are other uses for regular (double) quotation marks in addition to showing quotes.

Vocabulary - Spelling salutation (in business letters) - the opening address such as Dear Sir or Madam. closing (in business letters) - the ending phrase such as Sincerely yours. apostrophe - an apostrophe ( ' ) is the symbol to show possession or contraction. possessive - to show ownership.

Vocabulary - Spelling contraction - where one or more letters are omitted, and two words are joined (contracted) to become one with an apostrophe to show where the omitted letters were: do not - don't. homonym - two words that sound alike but are spelled differently and mean different things: whether and weather; they're, there, and their.
