The Parts of a Book

Today you will learn all about the parts of a book. Welcome to the Library Today you will learn all about the parts of a book. I.1.6.4 Recognize source of information in different parts of a book: (eg: title page, table of contents, index, glossary, Verso page, appendix, dedication page, preface/foreward, author information, bibliography, blurb, afterward) I 1. 6.5 Use text features to locate information that answers questions: (eg: topic sentences, captions, bold print, chapter headings, subheadings, etc.)

The Outside of a Book Sometime the outside of a book is covered with a Book Jacket. This is the paper or plastic coated covering of a book that is found on the outside of the book which features the title of the book, the author, a colorful photo, and often a brief Synopsis or summary of the book and some biographical information on the author.

Inside the Front of a Book I Love To Read Title Some books have a Half Title Page that comes right before the full Title Page. It tells us the title of the book only and usually has an illustration.

Sandy, Oregon Title Author and Illustrator Publisher Place of Publication The Title Page is at the beginning of a book, usually the second or third right-hand page. The Title Page tells us the same information as the front cover PLUS it tells us who the publisher is and where the publishing company is located.

Inside the Front of a Book Copyright Symbol Copyright Notice The Verso Page is the reverse or back of the Title Page. Sometimes it is called the Copyright Page. It tells us the year the book was published and other publishing and printing information. Inside the Front of a Book The Dedication Page usually comes right before or after the Title Page. Sometimes the dedication is added to the Verso Page. The Dedication is where the author and/or illustrator write a short statement thanking someone or a group of people for their support, help, and inspiration. Inside the Front of a Book Introduction People often ask, “Where do you find stories?” Stories are everywhere: in books and newspapers, in the movies, in everyday events, in dreams, in the minds and mouths of people, and, above all, in our own lives. The Introduction is a short summary or explanation of the book.

Inside the Front of a Book Acknowledgements To all people who ask me where I found the stories and metaphors that I use in my work. Their sheer persistence and refusal to go out and find their own stories encouraged me to start work on my first draft. The Acknowledgment is a list of everyone who helped the author produce the book.

Inside the Back of the Book Some books have a Glossary in the back of the book. Glossaries are usually only found in nonfiction books. The Glossary is an alphabetical list of terms found in the book and their definitions.
