A Costly War In 1763, the French and Indian War had ended. The British won but it was costly. It was costly in two ways. It cost the British money and the British government lost some of its control over the American colonies.

Taxes Cause Anger The British government started charging taxes to gain control back. The colonist became angry. These actions by the British and the anger of the colonists led to the American Revolution.

The Stamp Act The Stamp Act was a new tax on every piece of paper used. This stamp was proof that a tax had been paid on items.

Protest Causes Repeal The Colonists revolted and protested this act. In 1766, the Stamp Act was repealed.

The Townsend Act In 1767 The Townsend Act was started. It taxed glass, paint, oil, lead, paper, and tea. The colonists were angry and again protested.

No Taxation Without Representation The Colonists would not pay the taxes without representation in the British Government.

Parliament Gives In! So Parliament repealed all the taxes EXCEPT the tax on tea.

Parliament Taxes Tea The Parliament lowered the price of tea, then added a tax on it. The Parliament hoped they could trick the colonists into paying this because colonists really loved tea.

No Taxation Without Representation If the colonists paid the tax on the tea then they were accepting the right of the British government to tax them without representation. The colonists refused to buy the tea!!

Tea Embargo! In New York and Philadelphia, ships that came to were not allowed to land. In Charleston, the ships carrying the tea were stored in a warehouse for three years.

Furious Colonists In Boston, the colonists were angry about all the taxes. When three tea ships arrived, the colonists were furious.

The Fight Had Started On December 16, 1773, as many as 7000 agitated people walked around the wharf where the ships. The people told the ships to leave and to collect the taxes. The ships would not leave without collecting the taxes!!

The Boston Tea Party That same night, about 200 men went to the wharf. Some of the men were in disguises. The men boarded the ships and the dumped all the tea into the harbor.

This protest was the groundwork for the American Revolution.
