NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES What’s the difference? Adam Dolah 9 th Grade

NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its usage.

NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

HOW IS COAL MADE ???

HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Water

SOLAR Energy from the sun. Solar energy is considered renewable because the sun is always there. There is no finite being depleted such as coal or gas. Solar energy is mainly used as a secondary source of electricity since it does not work well on cloudy days and at night.

GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth ’ s heat. How geothermal energy works is by the intense heat of the earth’s core. Many people use this heat as a source of energy by allowing this heat to cause turbines to spin and generate electricity. Since Earth’s heat is always there, so is the energy is makes.

WIND Energy from the wind. Wind energy is one of the most common kinds of renewable energy. Wind turns huge windmills which then start the spinning of turbines that generate a sufficient amount of electricity. This method is used in windy areas that receive high winds all year.

WATER or HYDROELECTRIC Energy from the flow of water. Water flows into a dam with water turbines built into it. The water causes these turbines to start spinning and now you have hydroelectricity. The most popular source of hydroelectricity is the Hoover Dam since it is one of the biggest. The continuous flow of water is what allows this to be a renewable resource.

SUMMARY What are the differences between nonrenewable and renewable resources?

SUMMARY Renewable resources are the resources that can’t run out. Solar is renewable because the Sun isn’t going to go out anytime soon, and wind is too because there will always be wind. A nonrenewable resource are those that won’t last forever such as gas and oil which will eventually run out. Both renewable and nonrenewable resources are natural resources. Both of these are good sources of energy but renewable energy is not strong enough to fulfill all of our needs. Even though its not as strong as nonrenewable, it is cleaner and we don’t have to worry about ever running out of it.
