Word Stress

What is word stress? Word stress is the stressing of the most important word in a sentence so it stands out more than other words. “I really want to buy a book.” The highlighted word is stressed because it is the most important word in the sentence.

Facts about word stress: “I really want to buy a book.” The stressed syllable of this word is loud and slow. The most important word is often at the end of a sentence, especially at the beginning of a conversation. As a conversation continues, the word that gives new, or added, information becomes the most important word “Which book?” “That book.”
