CHAPTER 4 4/19/2017 FEDERAL GOVERNMENT Chapter 4 The U.S. Constitution gives the federal government the power to regulate foreign and interstate commerce. The federal government oversees the activities that involve two or more states or other countries. The federal government regulates foreign and interstate commerce. ITB

CHAPTER 4 4/19/2017 Chapter 4 FEDERAL GOVERNMENT Interstate commerce is business dealings involving companies in more than one state. The federal government would regulate a trucking company that ships products to several states. ITB

CHAPTER 4 STATE GOVERNMENTS 4/19/2017 Chapter 4 State governments regulate business actions within their own borders. Intrastate commerce refers to business dealings involving companies that do business in only one state. A trucking company that hauls products only within a state’s boundaries would be regulated by that state and not the federal government. State governments assign some of their legislative power to local governments. ITB

Safety standards for buildings, machines, and chemicals are set by government agencies. Government inspections and regulation of work areas help reduce the number of job-related accidents. You cannot be denied work because of your race, religion, sex or age. ITB

A contract is an agreement to exchange goods or services for something of value, usually money. It is a basic part of doing business. A contract may be written or unwritten. Certain elements must be included for the contract to be enforceable. ITB

A patent gives the inventor the sole right to make, use, or sell the item for 20 years. A company that creates a new means to record programs from television could get a patent for this process. ITB

Copyright protection lasts for the life of the person receiving the copyright. It also extends for 70 years after the person’s death. Copyrights are identified with the symbol. .Trademarks ITB
