PREVENTION IN MALAYSIA Health prevention in Malaysia is fairly low despite the many health campaigns and public awareness programs organised by the Malaysian Government. Malaysians are mostly unaware of early symptoms and signs until it is too late for cure –“Curable” disease (cancer, heart problems) –“Incurable” disease (HIV) Undeniably, more lives could be saved if Malaysians were more aware of the situation before it is too late.

PREVENTION IN MALAYSIA Malaysians are slowly accepting the use of technology in daily life. Malaysian Health Ministry has also established an official website to promote healthy lifestyles However, most still prefer traditional methods –Newspapers –Health pamphlets –Articles –Books

SURVEY OVERVIEW Conducted a survey (online and offline) to a total of 540 people in Melaka These consisted of 2 different survey analysis, one by category and the other according to age groups 336 were from 3 survey groups Multimedia University, Pantai Medical Centre and Manipal Medical College The other 204 samples were randomly selected from various age groups ranging from primary school students to pensioners. The aim was to evaluate the level of Teleprevention awareness in the state

SURVEY ANALYSIS BY CATEGORY INTERNET PURPOSE Obvious drop in the purpose of Internet usage for all three survey groups was for Health purposes. It is surprising how people on the whole are able to be very concerned about overall health but yet remain adamant in searching for health related information Immediate action has to be taken to create public awareness on the abundance of health information mainly for prevention of diseases that are placed on the Internet

TELEPREVENTION AWARENESS People working in the medical line such as doctors and nurses were more aware of Teleprevention –nature of their working environment –more likely to be exposed to the concept of Teleprevention Others are relatively unaware of Teleprevention –Lack of exposure and concern about health related matters

SURVEY ANALYSIS BY CATEGORY AWARE OF DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TELEMEDICINE AND TELEPREVENTION Manipal Medical College had the highest number of survey results proclaiming they understood the differences between Telemedicine and Teleprevention. They also have the least “no” and “not sure” answers in comparison to the other 2 survey groups. The other 2 groups had very high uncertainty rates for this question

SURVEY ANALYSIS BY AGE GROUP AGE GROUP CATEGORIES Of the total 204 numbers of surveys conducted on random people, we have received the most (33%) from the age group. The least lot consisted of people from age 60 and above with only 20 samples.

MEDIUM OF INFORMATION Newspapers and Television play a major role in relaying information for most age groups. Therefore, we should use such mediums to promote Teleprevention and create awareness in the community. The Internet is also seen to play a fair amount in spreading information

TELEPREVENTION AWARENESS The age group to have the highest understanding on Teleprevention is the middle age group (25-40). None of the samples aged showed any Teleprevention awareness However, the majority of all groups state that they do not know of Teleprevention or Internet prevention

INTERNET AS A TELEPREVENTION TOOL People below the age of 60 highly agree that Internet is the best tool for Teleprevention However, only 40% of the sample age above 60 agree to that statement. This could be partly due to the lack of exposure to the Internet on their part and would prefer a more traditional approach.

HEALTH PREVENTION ASSOCIATION All groups have associated health prevention with modern medicine. Traditional medicine and Religion have fairly similar results. This shows that people undeniably rely heavily on modern medicine to prevent and cure health problems as compared to the times where traditional medicine was the preferred choice.

METHODS TO CREATE TELEPREVENTION AWARENESS IN MALAYSIA Start Teleprevention Centre’s Promote through campaigns Provide Internet facilities to rural areas Conduct special training programs for individuals interested to be part of the Teleprevention Community
