Let’s Talk Subjects and Verbs Every sentence has a subject –The subject is either a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase –The subject is a person, place, thing, or idea that is doing the action of the verb –Sometimes subjects are understood rather than stated

Let’s Talk Subjects and Verbs The verb can be an action verb It can also be a linking verb Verbs have a tense –Past, Present, or Future Think of a verb as the hub of the sentence that everything else rotates around

Let’s Talk Subjects and Verbs Below is a simple sentence. It has one subject and one verb. The verb is underlined. Tom threw the ball. Notice that the verb is tucked away in the middle of the sentence.

What is a Direct Object? A Direct Object is a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase that receives the action of the verb. Let’s look at that same sentence again. Tom threw the ball.

What is a Direct Object? Because a Direct Object is a noun or pronoun, it answers the question “who?” or “what?” In this case, what did Tom throw? Tom threw the ball. ball is the Direct Object

What is an Indirect Object? An Indirect Object tells us who or what receives the Direct Object Let’s look again at a sentence Tom threw Bill the ball. Remember the Direct Object?

What is an Indirect Object? An Indirect Object tells us who or what receives the Direct Object Let’s look again at a sentence Tom threw Bill the ball. The Indirect Object tells us who or what received the ball.

What is an Indirect Object? Notice a pattern in this sentence The Indirect Object is always between the verb and Direct Object. Tom threw Bill the ball. The Indirect Object tells us who or what received the ball.

What is an Indirect Object? To check our answer, we can also change the Indirect Object to a prepositional phrase starting with to or for. Tom threw Bill the ball. Tom threw the ball to Bill.
