 WHY TRAINING? Helmet straps, slides, retainers and buckles can be confusing. Written instructions provided with helmets are often hard to read. Helmet fitting is a skill which can be acquired. Children wiggle. Practice makes perfect.

 Extreme Sports… are helping to make “Wearing the Gear” cool!

 HELMET PARTS Shell –Visibility and smooth surface to slide Liner –Absorbs impacts Straps and buckles –Holds helmet in place for first and subsequent impacts Occipital cradles –Improve comfort and accuracy of fit



 TWO STRATEGIES 1.Have parents follow instructions to fit the helmet, then have the fit checked (and corrected if necessary) by your trainees. 2.Have your trainees fit the helmet, demonstrating the proper fit to the parents.

 Advantages of having parents fit the helmet to their child Parents rehearse the desired behavior so they can successfully teach and monitor their children. Many people learn best “by doing.” Parents can ask questions. Reinforces parental role in providing guidance to their child. Requires fewer trained volunteers.

 USEFUL HINTS Provide chairs for parents/volunteers so they can be comfortable while fitting youth and youth can be more engaged in the process. Select the helmet that most closely fits the head, do not allow “room to grow.” When adjusting the straps, start with the straps on the right as you face the child.
