Thinking Strategically Tips to maximize the strategic plan alignment process

Big Picture: Strategic Plan is what GVSU thinks GVSU should be doingStrategic Plan Goals Measures Assessment Reflection

Strategic Planning Process  Pieces of a Mosaic University has outlined the mosaic Colleges have identified where they fit in Now units will complete the mosaic  The process: units will get an overview of selves; then see where they fit in

Everything is Interconnected University College Stakeholders Units How are you a part of the whole?

All human beings are about Inquiry  Actively engage in our world  Develop and test ideas (theories)  Adjust ideas based on some sort of evidence  We move to another level of critical thinking and problem solving through assessment process

WINTER DRAFT PLANFEEDBACK FROM CONSTITUENTS WITH OBJECTIVES***DRAFTS > 35***** MEASURABLE+OBSERVABLE - GOALS ARTICULATED IN THE PREFERRED FUTURE STATE OF GVSU -SUSTAINABILITY, INCLUSIVENESS AND COMMUNITY ADDED AS VALUES -NEW VISION STATEMENT -ALL CONSTITUENT GROUPS WERE GIVEN A DRAFT TO REVIEW AND CRITIQUE A Brief Timeline of SP

SEPT 2009OCT 2009 UAS, STUDENT SENATE,BOARD APPROVES AP COMMITTEE ENDORSE A Brief Timeline of SP Jan 2010 April 2010 SP ImplementationColleges/divisions Beginsalign their SP

AUGUST 15, 2011 TO CLAS DEAN’S OFFICE UNITS UPDATE THEIR SP IN ORDER TO ALIGN AND SUPPORT THEIR COLLEGE OR DIVISION [DUE TO PROVOST, SEPT. 15, 2010]. A Brief Timeline of SP

CLAS Realignment April 2010  Where does CLAS fit?  Meeting 1- discuss university plan  Meeting 2- discuss template and assign tasks using Google Docs  Pairs worked on two goals and completed work  Meeting 3- discuss Goal 1 and pairs take two more goals  Meeting 4 discuss all goals as a group

Group activity  Checking out the Strategic Plan Strategic Plan

Case study of alignment with Strategic Plan  Template used by Colleges Template used by Colleges  Critical Thinking/Problem Solving  The template for units- See attachments

Everything is Interconnected University College Stakeholders Units

 Baseline Expectations See definition of terms attachment  At minimum, strategic plans should include at least one goal in the following areas: Faculty Student Program External Stakeholders/Entities *  * You may choose to add this goal based on unit work with community and external groups  Note that student learning outcomes (SLO’s) are not included as many of these have already been updated in WEAVE online. The three year review of unit SLO’s will continue to follow the UAC Assessment schedule.  Each identified goal is expected to have a least two objectives. Several strategies may be described for each objective, or, in some cases, a single strategy or action is all that will be required.

Provost level thoughts  Comprehensive = value Teaching + Scholarship + Service Note: Obj 1.4: Are there differing criteria for unit graduate faculty? Note: Obj by 2011 units will articulate “value” of service to unit Might the Personnel Document process provide information for this? Extend the discussion, rather than begin the discussion?

Provost level thoughts  High Impact Practices (HIP) Service learning Undergraduate research/creative activities Co-curricular activities Internships, fieldwork, field trips etc…  Sustainability  Inclusive

Unit Ideas  Good ideas!  Next step: Authentic, realistic  Outside readers – will they comprehend what your unit wants to do? Examples  Improve- move from what to what in the next 5 years?  Relationships with external groups- is this increase number of students? Increase alumni feedback? Etc….

Supporting Alignment  Challenge: how do we get more specific with our ideas without “bean counting”?  Units may choose to attend a personalized 1 hour workshop Translate ideas to goals Create clear objectives, strategies and measures Learn how to align ideas  Sign up sheet- Nov 1, 2- 1 hour

Summary  This is alignment not re-creating  Existing strategic plans are used for the alignment process  Units have the opportunity and choice to review existing strategic plans and change, edit, add  Alignment format is the attached template

Summary  The template is the format requested by the Provost’s Office for College reporting related to unit strategic plans. The primary purpose of the template is to show alignment. For the reporting purposes of the University, the CLAS College strategic plan and units’ aligned strategic plans will be submitted in the template format. This template should represent the unit strategic plan and it is formatted to allow all audiences (faculty, units, administrators, Provost) to see how the work of the units, colleges, and university is being undertaken and identify areas that are not being addressed. This format also allows units to identify where they align into the scheme of the work done by the university.
