Blue Prints

Blueprints vs. Floor Plans A floor plan (floor plan, remodeling plan, room plan) is a scaled drawing of a building, room or home as viewed from above. It will show placement of rooms, doors, windows, major fixtures and appliances, etc. Blueprints are far more detailed and technical plans for your remodel or other construction project. The name ‘blueprint’ is derived from the material and the coating used to produce these plans in the past. A complete set of blueprints will include a floor plan, elevation drawings of each side of the structure, basement or foundation plan, including footings and bearing walls, a complete electrical layout, a framing plan, drawings of all plumbing and mechanical systems, cross section drawings of structural elements, a roof plan, and a site plan.

Site Plan A site plan is an architectural plan and landscape architecture plan for the building and the plot that the building sits on A site plan usually shows a building footprint, travel ways, parking, drainage facilities, sanitary sewer lines, water lines, trails, outside lighting, and landscaping and garden elements.

A site plan also includes... Property lines Outline of existing and proposed buildings and structures Distance between buildings Distance between buildings and property lines (setbacks) Parking lots, indicating parking spaces Driveways Surrounding streets Landscaped areas Easements Ground sign location Utilities

Elevation Drawings An elevation is a view of a building seen from one side, a flat representation of one façade or side. This is the most common view used to describe the external appearance of a building. Elevations drawings are labeled with the direction they are facing

Room elevations You can also have elevation drawings of individual walls inside the house

Cross Sections Drawings A cross sections in a drawing like the elevation drawing but cut into the outside wall of the house on each side. In a cross sections you can see what is right behind the outside walls used to see and understand the structural elements of a house such as stairs, fireplaces, rafters ect….

North Wall- 15 feet with one 6 foot window, 2 outlets 7. Floor Plan Practice Room Complete a Floor Plan Practice Room Draw using the exact instructions below, ¼” graph paper, and a pencil. This is a ¼” = 1’ scale so remember each graph square is 1 foot and the 6” walls are drawn as 1/8” thick. Once the pencil draft is complete, trace everything with a black marker and a ruler. Write the dimensions of each wall and label the north wall. Complete the room by designing the inside using the template provided. North Wall- 15 feet with one 6 foot window, 2 outlets South Wall- 15 feet with two 3 foot windows, 1 outlet East Wall- 20 feet with one 3 foot door that swings into the room, one outlet, 1 light switch West Wall- 20 feet, a wall light, a closet with bifold doors. Place a ceiling light in the center room.
