III. Purposes of the Final Report To document your lesson study as scholarship of teaching & learning To make your lesson study accessible to various audiences

Lesson Study as Scholarly Inquiry A Lesson Study Final Report is scholarship when it involves systematic inquiry of teaching and learning results in work that can be peer reviewed results in work that, when made public, can be built on by others

More than a Report The final report contains systematic research on teaching & learning usable teaching materials & lessons artifacts that may be used in conference presentations, teaching portfolios, faculty and graduate student mentoring, department and program assessment, etc.

Audiences for Your Final Report use or adapt your lesson or lesson materials for their own classes borrow approaches and strategies when they teach similar topics or pursue similar learning goals think about what your lesson study reveals about teaching and learning in your field (e.g. how students learn or do not learn subject matter) Fellow teachers will want to…

VI. Writing Your Final Report Prepare Your Report in Word and then. . . Use KEEP to Publish Your Report

Prepare Your Final Report in Word Write your complete final report in Word before you prepare the KEEP version. The Word version will make it easier to prepare the KEEP version. Identify the files you want to upload to the KEEP version of the report—these may be text, images, audio, video files.

What Does the Online Report Look Like? This Word document is published as this online report. Click here to view the online version

Why are There Two Versions of the Report? To enrich the representation of your work and make it accessible to others. The Word version is a manuscript that readers can download in its entirety or in parts. The KEEP version can include additional material, especially media such as audio and video to supplement your account of the lesson study. KEEP makes lesson studies public and easily accessible.

Click here to sign up for a free KEEP account. 1. Create a KEEP Account You need an account to use the KEEP tools. Click here to sign up for a free KEEP account.

2. Add the Final Report Template to Your KEEP Account You need the template to create your final report. Click here to add the Lesson Study Final Report Template to your KEEP Dashboard.

3. Log into Your KEEP Account Check your email for a confirmation message from KEEP. It will contain your login and password information, which you will want to write down for future use. Always log in at http://www.cfkeep.org/static/ Click here to log into KEEP.

4. Edit Your Final Report Template To access your template, you must first log onto KEEP and go to My Dashboard. On your Dashboard, look for Lesson Study Final Report Template Click on the EDIT icon next to Lesson Study Final Report Template

To Insert Background Information Click on this button to insert your information Title: Write a descriptive title for your lesson study so that others may cite your work. (E.g., "Reading for Complexity: Recognizing and Valuing Ambiguity in Literature") Authors: Include the names and institutional affiliations of each person on your lesson study team. [TIP: When editing this box, click on the "Add/Edit Image" tab to insert a small photo of your team.] Contact: Include a name and email address of a person who may be contacted about your lesson study. Discipline or Field: If your lesson may be used in more than one discipline or field, list all that apply. Course Name: Give the course title rather than its catalog number (e.g. "Freshman Composition" rather than "English 110"). Date: Include the date you posted (or last updated) your final lesson study with KEEP Toolkit. Click on this button if you want to insert links

To Insert Course Description Return to the Lesson Study Final Report Template and click EDIT icon Go to the box labeled Course Description Click on Add your course description and SAVE Course Description Briefly describe the course, its place in the curriculum, and where the lesson fits in the course. Include pertinent facts such as course level, class size, student population, length of lesson, and learning environment (e.g. networked classroom, lecture hall, special equipment, etc.). [TIP: When editing this box, you may add links to related websites (e.g. school, department or faculty webpages). Click on "edit links" or the insert link icon.]

To Insert Executive Summary Return to the Lesson Study Final Report Template and click EDIT icon Go to the box labeled Executive Summary Click on Add your executive summary and SAVE Executive Summary In approximately 250-450 words, provide an overview of your learning goals, instructional design, and major findings about student learning.

To Insert Printer Friendly Version of Complete Report Return to the Lesson Study Final Report Template and click EDIT icon Go to the box labeled Printer Friendly Version of Complete Report Click on Upload your complete report, add a link in the box and SAVE The Complete Report Link to your complete lesson study report. Format the report using the Complete Report Template below. Then upload the Complete Report to this box.

To Insert Links to Your Lesson The Lesson To provide easy access for users, this box contains links to your lesson plan and all the materials used to teach it. Annotate each item with a brief description. Link to the lesson. Upload the lesson portion of your Complete Report. Link to all materials needed to teach the lesson. Upload original handouts, PowerPoint slides, overheads, prompts, samples, etc. (If possible, upload a single PDF, Word, RTF, or zip file that contains all the materials.) Insert links to relevant websites or online resources. If copyrighted texts or materials are part of the lesson, include title, author and publication information. Link to video or audio clips of the lesson. Excerpts of a few minutes in length work best. Return to the Lesson Study Final Report Template and click EDIT icon Go to the box labeled The Lesson Click on Upload your Lesson files including the lesson plan, handouts, video clips Add links in the box and SAVE

To Insert Links to Your Study Return to the Lesson Study Final Report Template and click EDIT icon Go to the box labeled The Study Click on Upload your Study files including the study, observation guidelines, checklists, tables, etc. Add links in the box and SAVE The Study To provide easy access for users, this box contains links to your study. Annotate each item with a brief description. Link to the study. Upload the study portion of your Complete Report. Link to your observation guidelines, questions, checklists, etc. Link to any material that condenses and depicts key findings, e.g. observer reports, rubrics, figures, tables, video clips, etc.

Why Use Video? To show important, interesting, key features of the lesson such as episodes of student learning how an exercise works in practice an overview of the entire lesson

5. Send Us Your Final Report When your report is complete, you will need to send a copy of the KEEP version to us. Go to your KEEP account (My Dashboard). Check the box next to your completed final report (far left column). Next, click on the Send to icon at the top of the page. When prompted, enter in the following email address: catl@uwlax.edu

6. Email us Last, please send a quick email message to Bill Cerbin, cerbin.will@uwlax.edu to indicate that you have sent your KEEP report to our account.
