PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 1 An Introduction To The Marine Engineering Specialisation

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 2 THIRD CLASS MARINE ENGINEERING The 3rd Class course of the Marine Engineering Specialisation is intended to be no more than a basic introduction to the small marine diesel engine and its associated mechanical and electrical systems.

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 3 On Achieving Class 3 You Should Be Able: Understand the need for mechanical and electrical Health & Safety Rules, with particular emphasis on the Workshop environment. Understand the working cycles of the diesel engine. Identify and understand the function of the major components of a diesel engine. Cont’d

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 4 Understand the function of the basic Mechanical and Electrical systems associated with a small marine diesel engine in a typical SCC motor boat installation. Understand types of fastenings both Mechanical and Electrical in common use, and be able to use the tools used in conjunction with them. Be able to use simple electrical meters.

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 5 SECOND CLASS MARINE ENGINEERING The 2nd Class Course of the Marine Engineering Specialisation is intended to introduce the cadet to practical operation, routine care and maintenance of a small diesel engine; it associated electrical systems and a small boat electrical system.

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 6 On Achieving Class 2 You Should Be Able: Understand the need for Health & Safety rules, particularly during operating and maintenance procedures. Understand the purpose of all mechanical and electrical systems associated with a small diesel engine. Understand the purpose of all electrical systems aboard a small boat Cont’d

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 7 Be capable of assisting a qualified engineer in small maintenance tasks. Be capable of operating a motor boat diesel engine, its associated electrical systems and the boat’s electrical systems. Note Most of the Marine Engineering (Mechanical) Class II Syllabus is based on the RYA Diesel Engine Course. Completion of the course at a RYA recognised teaching establishment with RYA recognised Instructors will qualify for the award of the RYA Course certificate.

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 8 FIRST CLASS MARINE ENGINEERING (MECHANICAL) The 1st Class Marine Engineering Specialisation (Mechanical) is intended to enable a cadet to progress to become the competent operator of small marine diesel and outboard engines. It will enable a cadet to have a deeper understanding of Health & Safety awareness, which will include manual handling, noise and fuel dangers. It will also, when used alongside the 1st Class Marine Engineering Specialisation (Electrical), form a basis upon which to build his/her Offshore Engineering capabilities.

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 9 On Achieving Class 1 (MECHANICAL) You Should Be Able: Have a responsible understanding of Health & Safety Rules. Be a competent operator of a small marine diesel engine. Be capable of carrying out routine maintenance and top overhaul of a small marine diesel engine. Be a competent operator of an outboard engine. Be able to carry out simple outboard engine fault diagnosis & rectification.

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 10 FIRST CLASS MARINE ENGINEERING (ELECTRICAL) The 1st Class Marine Engineering Specialisation (Electrical) is intended to provide a cadet with knowledge of the principles of power generation and of power distribution requirements in an offshore vessel. It will also provide practical, supervised, fault diagnosis experience, and enable a deeper understanding and awareness of electrical Health & Safety. When used alongside the 1st Class Marine Engineering Specialisation (Mechanical), it will form the basis upon which to build his/her offshore engineering capabilities.

PO (SCC) C. James, Liverpool City Unit Intorduction to Marine Engineering 11 On Achieving Class 1 (ELECTRICAL) You Should Be Able: Have a responsible understanding of Health & Safety Rules Under supervision, witness the operation of electrical switchgear up to 240Volts AC Under supervision, witness the connection of shore supply up to 240Volts AC Supervise and carry out battery maintenance and charging Be capable of assisting in tracing simple faults in circuits up to 24 volts Be aware of the need to carry out Portable Appliance Testing
