Looking at living things
The characteristics of living organisms. All living things are made of cells. have DNA obtain and use energy. Excrete wastes grow and develop. reproduce.
Life’s Organization *Student Learning Target: I can define and identify living things based on their ability to carry out life functions. *Aim: What makes.
BACTERIA & PROTISTS HAVE CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS, WHILE VIRUSES ARE NOT ALIVE SINGLE –CELLED ORGANISMS AND VIRUSES.
BIOLOGY What is biology? Biology is the study of life. What is an organism? Each individual living thing. Example: Bacteria, Paramecium, Cat, Rose etc.

Biology Chapter 1.1 The Study of Life. What is Biology?  Biology is the science of life. Biologist study all forms of living things, not just humans.
What are the Characteristics of living things?. Biology is the study of life. Biotic— something alive Abiotic—something not alive.

Living things Where plants and animals align. What’s alive  We are surrounded by living and non- living things.  All animals and plants are living things.

Topic: Life Processes Aim: Describe the characteristics that make something living or non-living. Do Now in a group: Imagine that you are space traveler.
Characteristics of Life 8 Life Functions
Observing and Asking Questions An observation is the act of noticing and describing events in a careful, orderly way. What observations can be made.
So what is a living thing? Anything that possesses all of the characteristics of life is called an organism. The characteristics of life are as follows:
The Importance of cell division. How do we get from this To this 1 Cell - Zygote 2 Cells More then 100 Trillion Cells.
Characteristics of Living Things. What is biology? The study of living things All living things share certain characteristics 1. Made of Cells 2. Use.
Classification of Living Things. Characteristics of Life Cells- most basic unit of life. *Unicellular/Multicellular Ex. Animal, Plant, Bacteria.
What Makes Something Alive? The 8 characteristics of living things.
Characteristics of Life Notes. All living things have some characteristics in common; we call these the characteristics of life. If any living thing doesn’t.

 Living things are biological structures that respond to changes in the environment or within their own entities.
How can you tell the difference?.  Living things have at least 5 common characteristics 1. They are ORGANIZED 2. They RESPOND to stimuli 3. They use.

Characteristics of Living Things

7 Characteristics of Living Things Movement Growth & Development Sensitivity Reproduction Use of Energy Made of Cells Eliminate Waste

Movement Living things move They either move externally (like animals) or parts of them can move (like plants)

Growth and Development Living things grow Living things change as they age A seed growing into a plant A small child growing into a human A caterpillar growing into a butterfly

Sensitivity Living things respond to the environment around them If something hurts they move, if something is threatening they move

Reproduction Living things must make more of themselves Can be done by Creating a seed like a plant Creating a baby like animals Creating a duplicate like bacteria

Use of Energy All living things need energy to function They will either make their own energy (plants, some bacteria) or they will have to consume something to get that energy (animals)

Made of Cells Living things are made up of cells This could mean one cell, or many cells

Eliminate Waste The cells of all living things produce waste Living things must be able to get rid of this waste in order to survive
