What they Do Otherwise known as Nursing Aides Nursing assistants are very important for people who are unable to accomplish tasks on their own. They help people get dressed, eat, bathe, and walk around the facility. They tend the patient to their every need, from changing bedding, bringing meals, and cleaning up their room.

 Nursing assistants are under the supervision and direction of Nurses. They inform the Nurse about an changes of the patient, and the total progress of them.  They as well monitor vitals such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration.  Their patient is their top priority, and should be very encouraging. Talking to them, and being a friend in a difficult time is most important.

Basic Skills Needed Must be patient, understanding, and be able to keep your wits. Following directions carefully is a must! Be able to work under pressure Be able to communicate well

Most States Require Nurses to be certified High School Diploma Usually take less than a year to be certified Take courses in nutrition, nursing skills, basic anatomy, and infection control. Some states require a certification test, in others, you are certified as soon as you graduate.

Working as a Nursing assistant can be extremely physically demanding. Pushing wheel chairs, help patients out of bed, lifting and bending, and being a support for patients when they walk. Back problems are common among this job. It can be mentally demanding too, as they work with the severely ill, and elderly. Some of the patients aren’t cooperative along with some of the family members sometimes, too. Nursing assistants are exposed to many infectious diseases and must take many precautions so they do not contract them.

 Wages in South Dakota can differ from Experience, position, education, and place of work. National average for Nursing assistants is about $12 per hour, and most work 40 hour weeks.
