Systems Engineering Definitions (International Council on Systems Engineers) Systems Engineering: An interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. Systems Engineering considers both the business and the technical needs of all stakeholders with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user needs. System Architecture: The aggregation of decomposed system functions into interacting system elements whose requirements include those associated with the aggregated system functions and their interfaces requirements/definition.

Value of Systems Engineering* *Source: INCOSE Systems Engineering Center of Excellence SECOE INCOSE 2003; & Honour, E. “Understanding Value of Systems Engineering”, INCOSE Conference, June 20-24, 2004 Cost and Schedule Performance as a Function of Systems Engineering Effort

Missouri S&T Systems Engineering Program  Housed in the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering department.  The diversity (of research and teaching specialization areas) are maintained through five affiliated faculty who have joint appointments with the department:  Electrical and Computer Engineering  Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering  Only university that had three INCOSE Steven’s Doctoral Awardees as Dr. Dagli advisor(2008, 2010, 2013)  Two INCOSE Fellows (INCOSE Fellows Chair, Dagli)  One IIE Fellow (Dagli)  INCOSE Best Student Poster Awardee (2012, 2013)  Nine teaching and adjunct faculty from premier aerospace industry nationwide and internationally.  Founder and organizer “Complex Adaptive Systems Conference ( Dagli ) S&T – Millennium Arch

Missouri S&T Research in Systems Architecting and Engineering  Conducted through SESL, SERC for DARPA, and DoD  Illustrative SERC, DARPA and DoD Research:  Enterprise and System of Systems Modeling  An Advanced Computational Approach to System of Systems Analysis and Architecting using Agent-based Behavioral Modeling  Agile Systems Engineering: Investigation and exploration of ”immersive” training technologies  Agile Systems Engineering: Experiential and Active Learning Approach  System Engineering body of Knowledge SEBOK  Systems Engineering Capstone Registry  Evaluating Systems engineering Methods, Processes, and Tools (MPT)  Complex Adaptive System Analysis for Virtual Forward Operational Base Camps  Human Assisted Manufacturing Model Library S&T – Millennium Arch

The Basics (1 of 2)  Apply for admission and enroll  For a Masters of Science in Systems Engineering: o Complete six core courses and o Complete four courses from one (or more) of the specialization tracks domain specific graduate certificates.  For a Systems Engineering Graduate Certificate: o You need complete the following four courses – SysEng 368, SysEng 413, SysEng 468, and SysEng 469 o You can transition from the Systems Engineering Graduate Certificate program to the Master’s Degree Program.  Obtain approval of your course of study from graduate program office.

Course Mode of Delivery and Communication  Access courses “live” on the Internet from home, or from work locations (depending on Boeing policies and management approval).  All lectures are archived for the semester and are available on-demand 24/7 for asynchronous viewing and review purposes.  Both schools use Blackboard as course platform.  Course materials are posted on Blackboard before lectures for download.  Return homework through Blackboard, by or as a graded pdf file.  Your advisor, faculty members, and TAs are available via phone, WebEx discussion boards and .  Missouri S&T has very limited use of TAs, due to typically small (15-20 students) class sizes.

Teaching Philosophy and Courses

Systems Engineering Teaching Philosophy  The systems engineering pedagogy is to expose students to the wide range of influences that program managers and systems engineers face in real programs, along with the systems engineering tools that are needed to produce the best balanced development of today’s complex systems, while incorporating “real-world” problems that expand the students’ knowledge base in the area of “system life-cycle.”  The students are exposed to a variety of opinions, tools and methodologies. The end point of the inclusion of design prototyping, electronics, software development, and validation from a real world customer is a more personal understanding of the process and results of systems engineering realities.

Systems Engineering Fall 2012 Project: Squad Training in Near Real Combat and Cultural Conditions Monitoring NEED STATEMENT: This project is to design a means to record/relay to a trainer the movements and reactions of soldiers in a given training environment, allowing for the evaluation or their ability to interact culturally with non-combatant foreign nationals. The scenario this will be used in will be an Afghanistan village, although the system must be flexible enough to be applied to other training scenarios. The information provided to the system will be through a set of legacy equipment as specified by the Integrated Training Vest (ITV) system. This information is relayed to a trainer in a control room monitoring a group of up to eight soldiers using the ITV system so that the trainer can evaluate whether a social faux pas has been committed. The system must be capable of monitoring, recording, and conveying sufficient information to evaluate the soldiers’ performance within the simulation as well as the health of the soldiers during training. The overall budget for the development of the system is not to exceed $5000. The system design must be available by December 11 of 2012, and a prototype must be available for integration into the Missouri Mote system by May 5 of 2013.
