Pavia is a town in the north of Italy, 35 kilometres south of Milan on the lower Ticino river near its confluence with the river Po. It has a population of 71,000 inhabitants. The city was also the capital of the Kingdom of the Lombards from 568 to 774.

The province of Pavia is known for agricultural products such as wine, rice, cereals and dairy products. The town is also home to the ancient University. The city owns a vast amount of artistic and cultural treasures, including several important churches and museums, such as the well- known Certosa di Pavia.

Ghislieri College was founded in 1567 by Pope Pius V. It is a 450 years old Italian institution committed to promote University studies on the basis of merit, hosting around 200 pupils attending and offering them logistic and cultural opportunities such as scholarships, lectures, conferences, a volumes library (the third one among private libraries in Northern Italy), foreign languages courses.

Ponte Coperto "covered bridge" is a brick and stone arch bridge over the Ticino river. It was built for the first time by Romans, under Augusto emperor. Then it was rebuilt in 1354 with seven arches and in 1945 it was heavily damaged by allied action and partially collapsed in The new bridge was built in 1949 based on the previous one with only five arches.

Visconteo Castle is a castle built by Galeazzo II Visconti in The architect is Bartolino da Novara. The castle used to be the main residence of the Visconti family, while the political capital of the state was Milan.

Certosa di Pavia is a monastery 8 km north of Pavia. Built in , according to a vow of Gian Galeazzo Visconti meant to be a sort of private chapel of the Visconti dynasty. It is one of the largest monasteries in Italy.

Living space is tight in Italian cities, which are often geographically constrained because it is built into, on top of, or between mountains. Even where there is room to spread out, historically they tended not to. This may be due to centuries of history: Italy was a collection of separate city-states which were often at war with their neighbours; people huddled into fortress towns and cities for safety, and many Italians have never lost this preference for living close together. Pavia center Ticino river

Basic building materials in Italy are concrete, brick, and sometimes stone. In the mountains, some houses are chalet-style, made of thick wooden planks.

Urban Italians have been living in apartments, condos, and townhouses since Roman times. The apartment building may have been invented in ancient Rome, and even in those days single-family dwellings were only for very rich families. Italian cities today are almost entirely apartment buildings, four to five stories tall in mid-sized towns, eight to ten in larger cities.

In many buildings, the ground floor and basement are reserved for commercial use; greengrocers, bar/gelateria, bakers, and butchers are often right downstairs-extremely convenient, if you have forgotten something in your shopping. The first floor above ground level is undesirable to live on, partly because of pollution, partly because it's more vulnerable to housebreaking (that's why you often see bars on the lower windows of older buildings), so first floor apartments are often used as offices. Pavia, Strada Nuova

The higher up you go, the higher the value of the real estate, because the higher floors get more light and air and less pollution, and are less susceptible to being robbed. But the floor space remains the same- usually small.
