 MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament Sprain)  Occurs as a result of a medially directed valgus force from the lateral side or from external rotation of the tibia  Grade 1: a few ligament fibers are torn or stretched  Grade 2: sprain involves moderate tearing or partial separation of ligament fibers  Grade 3: complete tear of the ligament and complete loss of medial stability

 LCL (Lateral Collateral Ligament Sprain)  Result of a laterally directed varus force from the medial side or from internal rotation of the tibia  Much less prevalent than sprain to the MCL  Grade 1,2: pain is greatest  Grade 3: pain is intense initially then subsides to a dull ache Torn LCL

 ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament)  Occurs when the athlete decelerates with the foot planted on the ground  Turns in the direction of the planted foot, forcing the tibia into internal rotation.  Pop feeling  Knee feels like its coming apart

 PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament)  Injured when falling with full weight on the anterior aspect of the bent knee  Ankle and foot in planter flexion.  Pop in the back of the knee  Hit below the knee

 Meniscus Injury  Weight bearing combined with a rotational force while extending or flexing the knee  Medial meniscus has much higher rate than lateral meniscus  Effusion developing gradually over 48 to 72 hours  Joint line pain and loss of motion

 The Rotator Cuff  A group of 4 muscles that provide stability to the shoulder joint.  Injury is usually caused by an impingement  If there is a tear in the tendon or muscle, surgery can be used to reattach the tendon to the bone.

 Ankle Sprain  The most common of all ankle sprains  Stretching and tearing of the ligaments  Recovery time depends on the degree of the sprain  Sometimes a loud snap or pop

 Osgood- Schlatter Disease  Most common cause of knee pain in adolescents  Growth spurts make kids more vulnerable to this  Bones, muscles, and tendons grow quickly and not at the same time  Happens a lot to catchers in baseball

 Concussions  Very serious!!!!  Traumatic head injury  Rest for weeks  Don’t go on your phone or computer  Sleep most of the day  Try not to do anything that uses ATP (energy)

 Graduating college  Winning a race  Job promotion  Buying a house  This is all stress that produces a positive outcome

 Loosing your home  A loved one dying  Divorce  Getting kicked out of school  Stress that produces a negative outcome Way too much work to do

 Low energy  Aches and Pains in your muscles  Frequent cold and infections  Insomnia  Headaches  Upset stomach  Rapid heat beat

FFeeling overwhelmed BBecoming easily agitated HHaving difficulty relaxing AAvoiding other people FFeeling depressed and lonely

If you’re feeling aches and pains throughout your body, your muscles might not be ready for physical activity Lack of energy might cause you not to stretch before a game or practice, which can lead to future injury

 Stress leads to increased anxiety, which will cause changes in focus and muscle tension.  The changes in focus causes you to stray from proper mechanics and increases your possibility of injury.

 The amount of work you put into a sport can determine the amount of stress it can have on you  Recovering is essential  Recovering helps athletes train more efficiently  Overtraining is not healthy for your body  It can lead to injury Over training can be dangerous

 Muscle Relaxation  Eat healthy  Deep breathing  Find something to make you laugh  Listen to music  Get plenty of rest  Talk to someone about your stress Visualization helps many people deal with stress

 Being educated on this subject can give you ways to avoid injury  It can help you deal with or avoid stress  You can educate other people about it  Help people deal with stress and injury  Identify what kind of injury you or someone has
