Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms

Objective: Collect, organize, analyze, and display data (including box plots and histograms) to solve problems. Essential Question: Day 1: How can I use line plots, bar graphs, and histograms to display and analyze data? Day 2: What are some similarities and differences between a bar graph and histogram?

Vocabulary: Line Plot: a graph that shows data on a number line with x or other marks to show frequency. Bar Graph: a graphic form using bars to make comparisons of statistics. Histogram: a special kind of bar graph in which the bars are used to represent the frequency of numerical data that have been organized in intervals. Frequency: the number of pieces of data fall within a given interval or category. Frequency Table: a table for organizing a set of data that shows the number of pieces of data that fall within given intervals or categories. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms

Example 1: Frequency Tables Create a frequency table for the following data of favorite student colors: Green – 5, Blue – 8, Red – 4, Orange – 2, Yellow – 3 Favorite Color # of Students Green5 Blue8 Red4 Orange2 Yellow3

(include least value of 20 and the greatest value of 55) Step 2: Draw the frequency table.

Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Example 3: Line Plots The table below shows the number of minutes each student in a math class spent studying the night before the last math exam. Make a line plot of the data: Step 1: Choose an appropriate interval for the data. (include least value of 32 and the greatest value of 70) Step 2: Draw the number line. Minutes Studying Step 3: Plot each data point.

Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Example 4: Bar Graphs The table below shows the average number of vacation days per year for people in various countries. Make a bar graph to display the data: Step 1: Choose an appropriate interval and scale for the data. (include least value of 25 and the greatest value of 42) Step 2: Draw a bar to represent each category. In this case, a bar represents the number of vacation days per year for each country. 13United States 25Japan 25Korea 26Canada 28U. Line Plots, Bar Graphs, & Histograms Data Collection: On a sheet of Notebook paper record the following: 1) What is your favorite sport? 2) What is your favorite day of the week? Now on your paper to record the data for the entire class and then create a bar graph or histogram for each set of data. 3) What month were you born? 5) What is your favorite college or university? 4) What is your favorite type of music? 6) What is your favorite type of food?
