Westmoore Media Center Media Center Procedures Fall Semester Introduction to Library Science

Media Center Staff The Westmoore Media Center has two media specialists and one media assistant. You will be assisting all of us throughout the semester. Mrs. Bailey – Media Specialist Mrs. McReynolds– Media Specialist Mrs. Sanders – Media Assistant

The Four Big Ones To be successful in this class, you must do the following: Be on time every day! Wear your id every day! Follow dress code every day! Always leave your cell phone turned off and put away during class!

Circulation Procedures A student must have a valid student ID in order to check out library books in the Westmoore Media Center. A student may check out up to three library books at one time. A student may keep his/her library books for three weeks at a time.

Circulation Procedures If a student is not finished with his/her library book, he/she may renew the book for additional time. If a student returns his/her library book late, he/she may have to pay a fine. The fine is 10 cents per day per book. The maximum fine is $ 1.00 per book.

Check Out Procedures The following steps should be followed when checking out a book: Look at the student id to verify the students identity and, while on the check out screen, scan the barcode on the back of the ID. Scan the barcode on the front cover of the book. ** see the note on the following page ** Open the book and stamp the due date on the slip inside the front cover. Use the machine to desensitize the book.

Check Out Procedures Something to watch for when you are scanning books ** A student may not check out a book if he/she has an overdue book or a fine. A warning notice will pop up on the screen. You should not complete the transaction unless the student returns the overdue book or pays the fine. **

Check In Procedure The following steps should be followed when checking in a book: While on the check in screen, scan the barcode on the front cover of the book. Use the machine to sensitize the book. Place the book in the proper location on the shelving cart.

The Book Drop The book drop is the place where students return their library books. The book drop is located by the front doors of the media center. You should check the book drop at the beginning of the hour every day. All books in the book drop should be checked in and placed in the proper location on the shelving cart.

The Shelving Cart The shelving cart is where books are placed after they have been checked in. The shelving cart is located near the circulation desk. You should check the shelving cart at the beginning of the hour every day. You should shelve all of your books that are on the shelving cart each and every day.

Assigned Shelves Each student will be assigned a particular set of shelves. It is your responsibility to shelve all of your books that are on the shelving (return) cart every day. You should also check your shelves daily and make certain that they are neat and tidy. Remember, if your shelves are a mess or out of order, it will be difficult for students to locate books.

Assignments Library Science students will be expected to complete various assignments. These assignments will be related to the daily operation of the media center, reading or information literacy skills. All assignments will be given on Monday and due on Friday, unless otherwise stated. Late assignments will be reflected in the grade. You will need to make up any assignments that you miss due to absence.

Book Reports Every Library Science student will be required to read at least two books for the semester – one each nine weeks. Each student will be required to complete a book talk or other assignment for each book. More information will be given closer to due dates. The book report due dates for Fall semester are: October 9 May 7

Participation Grade A twenty-point participation grade will be given each day. To earn your points, you must do the following: Wear your id. Check the book drop for any books that need to be checked in. Shelve all of your books on the return cart and straighten your section. Complete all tasks assigned to you for the hour.

Shelf Check Each Library Science student will be responsible for an assigned shelf area. Each student is personally responsible for the appearance and proper shelving of all materials in that area on a daily basis. Periodic shelf checks will be done to assure the shelves are being maintained in the proper order. A grade will be given based on the condition of the shelves in your section.

Grading Scale The following grading scale will be utilized for this class Daily grades (90%) Semester Test (10%)

Other Things To Remember Library Science students are not allowed to have food or drink at the circulation desk. Library Science students may not use their phones during class. Library Science students should never leave the media center without permission.

In The End We look forward to a great semester with you!
