INTRODUCTION TO ESSENTIAL OILS Week Three

Introduction to Essential Oils In week one, we learned about the history, sources for oil and how to use them safely. Week two, we explored aromatherapy and carrier oils, sampled several popular oils and even made our own blend! This week we will learn about every day usage and created a dish to eat!!

Daily use of essential oils Essentials oils can be used for: Sleep and Relaxation  Diffuse into air  Apply directly to pillow  Apply as a linen spray  Bathe before rest Increase Energy  Diffuse into air  Add into morning beverage or meal  Incorporate into morning bathing Bathing  Add essential oils into bathwater  Use as bath oil  Mix into shower gel/bath salts Cleaning  Disinfectant  Trash can deodorizer  Dishes  Mildew spray  Mirror Cleaner  Eliminate mold

Daily use of Essential oils  Insect/Pest Repellent  Bug Repellent Lavender, lemongrass, patchouli, basil  Mice Repellent Toothpaste  Mix oil with baking soda to brush teeth and gums Carpet  Carpet cleaner  Carpet deodorizer  Grease remover  Gum remover  Place cotton ball with 4-6 drops oil into collection area of vacuum to freshen room while vacuuming. Clothing Deodorizer, using satchel with essential oil on it placed in drawers or closet.

Cooking with essential oils Things to remember when cooking with essential oils:  Essential oils are more potent that dried herbs  Because the oil is concentrated, essential oils contain all the plants healing, nutrients, oxygenated molecules and vitamins! Key differences between essential oils and vegetable oils:  Vegetable oils are 100 % fat, essential oils contain NO fat  Vegetable oils are usually pressed from seed and nuts like avocados, or the bran from grains.  Pure unadulterated essential oils are steamed distilled from plants although, citrus oil are cold pressed

Cooking with essential oils Common oils used in cooking: Lemon, orange, nutmeg, black pepper, peppermint, ginger, sage, lemon grass, grapefruit, fennel, spearmint, cinnamon bark, oregano, and basil. Not all oils are ingestible. If the label states “Not for Internal Use” or “For Aromatic Purposed Only” Do Not Use for cooking Measurements Approximately 60 drops of essential oil are contain in one teaspoon but, it is important to remember essential oils are concentrated; one drop of peppermint oil tastes to the equivalent of about 28 cups of brewed peppermint tea!

Cooking with essential oils  A 15ml bottle contains 280 drops of essential oil  A 5 ml bottle contains 80 drops of essential oil Always, begin with a single drop to your recipe, then taste. You can always add more. Now let’s get cooking!!!

Cooking with essential oils Salad Dressing ½ cup lemon juice 1 tsp minced garlic 2 tbsp reduced-salt soy sauce or Braggs ½ tsp dried basil ½ tsp oregano ½ tsp thyme 1 drop dill essential oil 1 drop sage essential oil Mix all ingredients together. Store in glass container. (If dressing is too potent, dilute with olive oil)

Cooking with essential oils Warming Hot Chocolate 1 cup of milk (any type) 1 tbsp raw cacao powder 1 drop cinnamon essential oil 1 drop clove essential oil 2 drops orange essential oil Honey or agave to taste Pinch of cayenne pepper Warm milk and cacao in a pan, then add honey and essential oils and the pinch of cayenne.
