What is an essay? An essay is usually a short piece of writing which is quite often written from author’s (student’s) personal point of view.

What are the different types of essays? There are many different types of essays and each type has a different purpose. The following are just a few of the most common types of essays…. Argumentative Essay Cause/Effect Essay Definition Essay Expository Essay

What is an Argumentative Essay? Should present pros and cons of the issue. Should contain an argument. Should contain evidence or support for the issue (facts, statistics, anecdotal evidence). Should concern a manageable topic.

What are the steps to write an Argumentative Essay? There are five main steps: Step1 Read the essay. Step 2 Underline key vocabulary of the question. Step 3 Decide if you are for or against the idea. Step 4 You should decide on the layout. Step 5 After you’ve written your plan, write your essay.

Read the essay. Read the question. Decide what kind of essay it is - opinion, compare/contrast, problem and solution, cause and effect, or a mixture. The type of question will decide the layout and your ideas.

Underline Underline key vocabulary in the question and write words with the same or related meaning. This will really save you a lot of time later on. It will also help to avoid repetition of words, and will show that you understand the question.vocabulary

Ideas Decide if you are for or against the idea. Usually it is best to give both sides (for and against - one paragraph each) and then to give your opinion in the conclusion. However there are other ways of laying out your essay.both sideslaying out

Layout You should decide on a layout. The easiest is four paragraphs: introduction (2 sentences) one side (4 sentences), the other side (4 sentences) and the conclusion (3 sentences). This will give you 13 sentences. An average of about 12 words each, that is 156 words approximately. Perfect!introduction conclusion

Write After you have written your plan, write your essay. Follow the steps in this website for writing the introduction, body, and conclusion. Check for fragments, sentences and comma.

Vocabulary Vocabulary Read and Underline Key Words. Cars have brought many benefits to the world, but have also had a negative effect. Write down other words with the Same Meaning. Eg: Cars. Machine Benefits. Advantages Negative effect. Disadvantages

Vocabulary Use your new words in the Opening Sentences. This essay sets out to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cars, describing the many benefits bought to the world and the negative effects.

Vocabulary Add a thesis. This essay will examine some arguments for and against ‘ cars’. (Thesis) Cars can move from place to place very quickly and save our time. However this movement sometimes brings problem, like reckless driving may lead to accident,

Ideas Many students worry about ideas. "I don't know what to say!" "I don't know anything about this topic!" However, you don't need too many ideas for an essay in an English exam. The magic number is three.

Ideas. Introduction Write 2 sentences. Body For- 4 sentences Against- 4 sentences. Conclusion (opinion) Write 3 sentences.

Arguments Give opinions of both the sides: Some people think…. While it is true that ….I believe…. Use linkers: So ….However….Although…..But….As…

Draft ---Edit---Submit Draft your essay, redraft it if necessary. Edit your essay as that’s very important. Submit your essay as an assignment.

A Model Essay A Model Essay “Cars have brought many benefits to the world, but have also had a negative effect”. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cars and give your opinion U&NR=1 This essay sets out to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cars, describing the many benefits bought to the world and the negative effects

A Model Essay….contd. Cars have many advantages. You can move for example from place to place very quickly. You can carry heavy things. It is safe for traveling. You can make trips, you can take your family where you want to for example Awafi, Dubai, Wonder land or even a day trip to Oman. You can go to other countries. You can have fun with your car drifting. You can race with your friends. You can sleep when you travel.

A Model Essay Cars have many disadvantages. The cars make many accidents, people are racing too much and children are driving under 18 without licenses. Sometimes when people drive too many hours without resting they become tired, lose concentration behind the wheel causing more road accidents. Cars cost money

A Model Essay…contd. because you have to pay for repairs, petrol, oil, filter, new parts, pipes, engines, tires, steering wheel fluid, batteries, exhausts, turbo and many other devices. The last disadvantage is that cars encourage people to become lazy. It is too easy to drive to Mc Donalds or other drive in cafes instead of walking.

A Model Essay….contd. In my opinion if you don’t have a license you don’t drive a car. I hope that people practice safety more in the future so driving becomes less dangerous.
