Purpose: –The purpose of this lab is to learn how to use a urinalysis as a diagnostic tool.

Background Information Urine is a compilation of all of your body’s liquid waste products and can be used to determine how efficiently your body is working. Many metabolic disorders can be diagnosed from substances that are present in the urine such as…..

Substances in Urine ContainsIndicates Glucosediabetes ProteinsHigh blood pressure Vitamin CExcess in diet KetonesHigh metabolism of fats diabetes PhosphatesHigh levels of exercise

Procedures There are two portions of this lab….. One with known solutions and another with mystery urine where you will be making a diagnosis on your patient.

Fill in your table from the following “known” tests. We will be performing the tests on: Glucose Proteins Vitamin C

Glucose “Known” test Set up 2 test tubes….. One containing control urine (yellow food coloring and water) and glucose urine. Add 2 mL of benedict’s solution to both and cook in a hot water bath for 5 minutes. Note the results.

Control is on the left and glucose urine is on the right.

Protein “Known” Test Set up 2 test tubes….. One containing control urine (yellow food coloring and water) and protein urine. Cook in a hot water bath for 5 minutes. After cooking, add one full pipette with vinegar. Note the results.

Results of protein test Control is on the right and protein urine is on the left.

Vitamin C “Known” test Set up 2 test tubes….. One containing control urine (yellow food coloring and water) and vitamin C urine. Add 15 drops of indophenol solution to both. Note the results.

Results of the Vitamin C test Control is on the left and vitamin C urine is on the right.

Mystery Urine Sample Your Number is #13 – online make-up Results –Glucose-orange –Vitamin C-navy –Protein-hazy

Complete the lab packet and hand it in to your teacher.
