Jamie Kastner 6 th Grade Math and Science Teacher

 For the student  Hands on activities  Scientific investigation  Discovery learning  Student asks question, investigates, and reports  For the teacher  Get them wondering  Facilitator  Guide students by asking questions  Tell me more about that  Never answer questions!!!

Learning Cycle StructuredGuidedOpen Formulates Question StudentTeacher Student Sets Procedure Teacher Student Provides Materials Teacher Student InvestigatesStudent Reports Discovery Student and Teacher Student

 5 E Model  Engage  Explore  Explain  Elaborate  Extend  Students make it their own, record their own findings

 Direct teaching to answer the why and how questions  Students ask other questions on the same topic to cycle the learning  Assess students understanding  Students elate to the real-world

 What type of inquiry was that lesson?  How could we make it another type of inquiry?

 Need to teach students how to be scientists  Ask questions, observe (using the senses), collect data, find evidence, share results  Need to teach them the nature of science  Gaining and understanding of the natural world  Science is based on evidence  Old ideas are replaced with new ideas when new evidence is conducted
