+ Verbs = words that express action OR condition 1. Action Verbs tell what a person, place, thing, or idea is doing. (run, think, decide, give, read, go, play, write, study) a) I wanted N.C. State to win the game. b) Matt quickly ran to class when he heard the minute bell ring. c) Gloria washes the dishes, and Bob dries them. 2. Linking Verbs tell what somebody or something IS. (am, is, are, was, were, will, be, seem, become) a) The roses are pink b) She is a great student. c) Kai became nervous when he realized he had to give a speech.

+ Verbs… 3. Helping Verbs work with the main verb to show complicated tenses or times. Helping Verbs + Main Verb = Verb Phrase (is going, should have done, will be talking) a) When I arrived, he was drinking lemonade. b) He has been drinking lemonade all afternoon. c) We are planning on going to the beach this summer. + Finding Verbs Look for the action word. Change the TIME of the sentence by saying yesterday, every day, and tomorrow at the beginning of the sentence. When you change the time of the sentence, the verb will change automatically. Yesterday Steve ate a pizza. (PAST TENSE) Every day Steve eats a pizza. (PRESENT TENSE) Tomorrow Steve will eat a pizza. (FUTURE TENSE)

+ More Subject Stuff 1. Sentences with more than 1 subject a) Katie and Jake swim at the YMCA. b) The kitchen and den are messy. 2. Sentences can have several subjects and several verbs. a) Gloria washed the dishes, and Bob dried them. 3. Strange Subjects – Don’t get confused if the subject of a sentence looks like a verb. Pay attention to the JOB that the word is performing. a) Dancing is fun. Who or what is fun?Dancing In this sentence, dancing is a gerund.
