Fort Sumter South Carolina government ordered North out of their state. Union ignored them, so Confederate army opens fire on Fort Sumter Two days of bombardment, but no casualties Union removes themselves from fort Outcome: Confederate Victory Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee secede.

Union had 23,000 casualties Union won the battle. Gettysburg and Vicksburg gave the Union momentum in the war.
