The online classroom is just as demanding, if not more so, [Remove comma after a conjunction as first word in a sentence unless it precedes a parenthetical phrase] than [Remove comma before "than" ] traditional classrooms. To succeed in the online classroom students must learn to communicate through writing, learn new skills, and be prepared for a structured way of learning. Below are excerpts from a recent paper. It is the student’s responsibility to make the suggested corrections, remove any of the blue text, and resave the document. Students should resubmit their papers until no blue text remains. The facilitator should include comments in the paper (below) to offer guidance to the student. Online students will be expected [The passive voice is a form of "be" (will be) and a participle (expected). Over-use of the passive voice can make paragraphs officious and tedious to read. Try to use the active voice most often; for example, passive voice = The paper was completed on time. Active voice = the student completed the paper on time--See Center for Writing Excellence > Tutorials & Guides > Grammar & Writing Guides > Active & passive voice] use their writing skills and even polish them up as necessary. Students should get [Doctoral rule (although good advice for any academic writer)--instead of using "get," which can mean many things, more formal is to use forms of "receive," "obtain," "arrive at," "can," "could," "grow," "able to," etc.] acquainted with available writing resource centers to use as tools for spelling and grammar review. Many new online tools are available for the new online learner. Online learners face many new challenges; it is indeed a new horizon. Students should expect to communicate online, using professional and [Check punctuation: insert a comma before this word if this is the last in a list of more than two -- or if it begins a new clause] academic writing skills. Just as in the tradition setting, tips and guidelines [in academic writing, if this is a series, place a comma before the final ] can prepare the novice online learner.
