Colonial America Most of the homes in colonial America were replicas of the English cottages in England. They are made of wood boards and they have steep thatched roofs. The cottages have only room called a keeping room. There is a fireplace for warmth and cooking.

Colonial Clothing Boys and men wore breeches. Breeches are short pants that stop at the knee. Along with the breeches, boys and men were long stockings up to the knee. Girls and Women wore long wool skirts, aprons, and coifs. Coifs are like bonnets, or a type of hat.

Colonial Food Colonists grew corn and other vegetables. Much of the corn is ground into cornmeal for making cornbread. They drank milk from goats and they ate ham and bacon from their pigs. The got eggs from their chickens. To preserve their meats, they salt or smoke the meat to prevent it from spoiling.

Colonial Food Extra food was stored in dirt undergrounds called cellars.

New England Colonies rich in forest and fur trapping Farmland was only good enough for small farms; gardens flourished in fishing, shipbuilding, lumbering, and fur trading things traded– furs, slaves, and molasses

Middle Colonies excellent farmland; farmers grew grains and raised livestock natural harbors practiced trading like New England, traded raw materials for manufactured items (furniture) established the idea of the freedom of the press

Southern Colonies Maryland Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia

Southern Colonies grew their own food along with major cash crops: tobacco, rice, and indigo plantations were kept up by slaves and indentured workers Bacon’s Rebellion– Nathaniel Bacon led a group of Virginia colonist against Native Americans who were attacking frontier farms
