What is color blindness? Color-blindness is when you are not capable to distinguish the differences between certain colors.

Symptoms You may be able to see a limited amount of colors. You be only be able to see few colors, while others see thousands. In rare cases, you may only see black/white/gray

Treatments & Cures Inherited color vision problems cannot be treated or corrected. Some acquired color vision problems can be treated, depending on a cause. Some ways to help make up for color vision problems: Wearing glasses that block glare-- people with color vision problems can see colors better with less glare. Wearing colored contact lenses– may help you see differences between colors.

Lifetime & limitations Color blindness is something you have for a lifetime. Limitations – Looking at a traffic light: With around 1 in 14 men being red green color blind the risk of misinterpreting the red stop light and green go light becomes apparent. Sitting in the sun: some people who are color blind cannot see when they are getting too red. A few other examples of limitations are: children coloring, people cooking, watching weather forecasts, and choosing your outfit.

Incidence Color blindness is almost always a hereditary trait. Red-green colorblindness is a recessive gene passed on to the X-chromosomes.

Inheritance Pattern This happens when you don’t have either red, green, or blue cone cells. Most are inherited and present at birth. Some cases: Can have an acquired color vision problem. Caused by aging, injury in the eye, or side effects of medicine.

Type of Mutation The mutation that causes colorblindness is sex-linked. Mostly males are colorblind. The gene that causes color blindness is located on the X chromosome.

FUN FACTS Mr. Rogers was totally red-green color blind and couldn’t distinguish between tomato soup and pea soup. He asked a colleague to taste his soup one day and tell him what flavor he had gotten. Knowing that he liked both, she asked why he didn’t just tuck in. “If it’s tomato soup, I’ll put sugar in it,” he said. Contrary to popular belief, less than .01% of people actually see no color. “Strongly colorblind can only tell about 20 hues of a color apart. Fathers cannot pass red-green color blindness down to his children. If a mother is red-green, all her sons will be, too. John Dalton, discover of color blindness, thought he had a colored fluid in his eyeballs. There is no complete cure for color blindness. 99% of all colorblind people are red-green colorblind.  Color blind people are sometimes rejected jobs, because of there color blindness. "What color is this?" is the most annoying question you can ask a colorblind person. Dogs aren't colorblind. In certain countries, you need normal vision to get a driver's license. On our website, we made the headings red, and the text various shades of green. If you are red green colorblind, you will see the opposite. In some cases, you will only see one shade of green”

Are you color blind?
