Introduction  Hospitality and Tourism Management is as old as civilization. Traders, hunters and others needed a place to rest and at the same time rest the horses. As the 19 th century emerged, hotels were built, travel was marketed and transportation systems emerged. Today, the hospitality and tourism management is one of the largest industries in the world! There are many opportunities for persons who are interested in “serving” and “being of service,” to exceed guests expectations.  What were the historical developments of hospitality and tourism management? What are the major components of hospitality and tourism management? What are some of the national organizations/groups related to Hospitality and Tourism?

Task  You have been asked by your company to research the Hospitality and Tourism industry through out history. You will design a three- fold pamphlet that your company will print to hand out at the college and career fair at your local high school. Your task will be to analyze information about the hospitality and tourism industry. View, research and summarize information related to the following: Question 1 Question 2 Question 3 Question 4 Question 5 Question 6  After gathering the needed information, create a three-fold pamphlet summarizing the information. Your pamphlet should project a clear summary of the history and opportunities available within each component of hospitality and tourism management.

Question 1  What were the historical developments of hospitality and tourism management? Log on to:  American Hotel and Lodging Association American Hotel and Lodging Association  Go to Search and type History of Lodging and 1-10 references will appear. Read two of the articles to include in three-fold pamphlet.  Visit Click on Links to review The Top Events of the 20 th Century. Choose ten events of interest and list in brochure.

Question 2  What are the major components of hospitality and tourism management? The components are those categories that encompass hospitality and tourism management. They include:  Hotels  Event and Convention Planning  Travel and Tourism  Retail  Food and Beverage Service.

Question 3  What are some of the national organizations/groups related to Hospitality and Tourism?  What are the goals and objectives of these groups?

Question 4  Review some hotel web sites and summarize historical facts about the development of hospitality and tourism management. How have these specific hotels impacted the industry?

Question 5  Visit click on Economic Development (lodging) and evaluate the report card of lodging facilities for How do the years compare? Include graph for this section.

Question 6  Determine economic trends impacting hospitality and tourism management. Visit the sites listed to determine the state of the economy. How does the state impact revenue for hospitality and tourism services, hospitality and tourism indexes, and overall trends? Include key indicators cited.

Process  You will be assigned to one of five teams.  Read information found in all links.  Complete each question by summarizing or making charts/graphs to illustrate trend or changes.  Use Publisher to Design and type a 3 fold brochure by including the answers to the questions.

Conclusion  Hospitality and Tourism Management Careers are challenging and provide many opportunities to be creative to exceed guest expectations. The career provides an unlimited number of opportunities for persons who are willing to serve and make guests happy.  After completion of the brochure, each team will be assigned one component from question two. The team will write a one to two page paper on their component and present it to the class.
