Offensive Line Techniques & Drills LT FOOTBALL Offensive Line Techniques & Drills

Offensive Line: Stance Principles 3 Point Stance: * head up * back straight * butt up * feet under butt * hand under chin * down hand is a coaching variable 2 Point Stance: * chin up, head back * chest forward, shoulders back * knees bent * base wider than shoulders

Offensive Line: Rules of Engagement 1. Remember the snap count * change the snap count on every rep of every drill 2. Never reach * if you have to reach, you are too far from the defender * move your feet to decrease distance 3. Block with your bottom * run on contact * do not only use your upper body 4. Use your shoulder when punching * do not just flip your arm 5. Never cross your feet

6. Maintain ball side lead * offensive lineman’s ball side foot must always be outside of the defender being blocked 7. Center always snaps the ball * on every rep of every drill or play 8. Technique references * terminology of defensive alignments must be understood by players and coaches 9 6 7 5 4 4I 3 2 2I 1 0 1 2I 2 3 4I 4 5 7 6 9 O O O O O O O X

Double Team

Combo

Offensive Line: Running Drills 1. Stance * use grid formation to emphasize the points of a proper 3 point stance 2. 1 2 Step * use grid formation * on snap, lineman takes two steps, each less than one foot * load on 1st step, punch on 2nd step * when loading, thumbs should point to breasts * should end in a proper 2 point stance * recoil into three point stance

3. 1 on 1 4. 2 on 1 * use t-bars to run up versus a bag * bags should always be held tight to the body * emphasize the rules of engagement 4. 2 on 1 * two offensive linemen block one bag * coach behind them changes call from a combo to a double

Offensive Line: Passing Drills 1. Stance * use grid formation to emphasize the points of a proper 2 point stance 2. Mirror * offensive linemen mirrors defensive linemen from cone to cone * when coach blows whistle, defensive linemen attempts to penetrate 3. ½ Body * defense pressures ½ of offensive lineman’s body * offensive lineman’s foot on the side being pressured must remain outside of the defender * defender can cross offensive lineman to pressure inside leg

* 5 on 5, defensive linemen v. offensive linemen 4. Full line, ½ Go * 5 on 5, defensive linemen v. offensive linemen * coach tells one, two or three defensive linemen to rush the cone located 5 yards behind the center X X X X X O O O O O Cone Coach
