OEI – Online education initiative What are the implications for Canada college and the district?

What is the OEI?  The Online Education Initiative (OEI) is a state- funded collaborative effort among California Community Colleges (CCCs) to increase student success and completion by working together to increase access to quality online courses and support services for students.

What are the goals of the OEI?  Ensure that more students can obtain certificates, degrees, and transfer to four-year colleges in a timely manner. Special attention is given to support services that are tailored the diverse needs of community college students.

What are the benefits of the OEI? ● Expand student access to quality online courses by providing support for course improvements aligned with common quality standards and by facilitating cross-college enrollment ● Increase student success and completion with support and services such as tutoring, online learning readiness, and basic skills support ● Encourage faculty and staff involvement with professional development, instructional design support, networking, and content resources ● Improved access to courses and services through an innovative common online learning environment ● Leverage cost through systemwide licensing

Timeline? Over the next two years, pilot colleges will begin offering online courses within the selected common course management system. All faculty and staff will have opportunities for collaboration and professional development starting in Spring Upon successful completion of the pilots, all California Community Colleges will have access to online learning readiness modules and tutoring solutions for free or at reduced cost. By 2016, the common course management system will also be available to all colleges for free or at reduced cost.

Where are they now?  Course exchange – This is the final product of the OEI, but the one that is the most complex.  Courses selected for the pilot are part of ADTs and are courses that commonly fill quickly.  Courses selected for pilot Courses selected for pilot  Meant to enable students to take online classes from across the group of participating colleges. None of the colleges in SMCCD are participating in the pilot.  Must develop business processes and standards to ensure consistent and effective data transfer between colleges. Details still a work in progress.  Launch with pilot colleges using new CMS is expected in Fall 2015.

Where are they now?  eTutoring – 3/20/15  OEI nettutor from Link Systems International (LSI) OEI nettutor from Link Systems International (LSI)  OEI has negotiated volume discounted pricing for online tutoring services.  Also funded a systemwide license for LSI’s WorldWideWhiteboard online tutoring platform. This platform can be used by any college wanting to hire its own tutors to provide online tutoring.

Where are they now?  Student Readiness modules, including Smarter Measure Assessment – Pilot colleges began using these in Jan and modules are supposed to be available at no cost by fall  Module 1: Introduction to Online learning  Module 2: Getting Tech Ready  Module 3: Organizing for Online Success  Module 4: Online Study Skills and Managing Time  Module 5: Communication Skills for Online Learning  Module 6: Online Reading Strategies  College can adopt any or all parts. Can be embedded into courses

Questions – tutoring and student readiness 1) What additional information about the tutoring and/or student readiness products do you want/need to discuss adoption at Canada College? 2) Who (at Canada) should participate in this discussion and decision? 3) Should this be a College or District decision?

Where are they now?  2/12/15 – Canvas chosen as the course management system for the OEI course exchange.  Contract information is not yet available, so we don’t know what it might cost the district.  Canvas - free trial available Canvas - free trial available

Questions – Course management system 1) What additional information about Canvas do you want/need to discuss adoption at Canada College? Should we have a few faculty pilot use of Canvas? 2) Who (at Canada) should participate in this discussion and decision? 3) Should this be a College or District decision?

Where are they now?  Course rubric – meant to ensure quality of course design as well as overall quality of courses in the Exchange.  Could be used for course design or course evaluation  OEI Rubric OEI Rubric  On-going evaluation, particularly around regular and effective contact. Needed for accreditation. Could use section of rubric on Interaction and Collaboration to assess.

Questions – OEI Rubric 1) How could the OEI rubric be used at Canada College? 2) Who (at Canada) should participate in this discussion and decision about the use you considered?

Where are they now?  Professional development – Standards for faculty preparedness. OEI does not currently have any requirement.  There is currently interest at CSM in developing district-wide standards for faculty preparedness for teaching online. What does Canada think?
