The Teachings of Jesus Our Goal Let us pray for spiritual discernment to understand His message and to grasp His unfathomable love manifested on the cross. And as we hear His tender voice calling us to follow Him, let us renew our commitment to walk daily with Him by faith and in obedience.
The Law of God The Teachings of Jesus Lesson 10, September 6 Ang Kautusan ng Diyos
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.’ ” The Law of God Key Text John 14:15 NKJV “If you love Me, keep My commandments.’ ” “ ‘If you love me, show it by doing what I’ve told you.’ ” (MSG) Susing Talata. ” (MSG).
The Law of God Initial Words Although Jesus criticized the openly legalistic practices of the Pharisees, He exalted the Ten Commandments, clearly affirming the perpetuity of the Decalogue and explaining its meaning and purpose. Christ Himself said that He had come to fulfill the law. His death was the ultimate revelation of the continued validity of God’s law. Panimulang Salita.
1. Showed the Law’s Perpetuity (Matthew 5:17, 18) The Law of God Quick Look 1. Showed the Law’s Perpetuity (Matthew 5:17, 18) 2. Deepened the Law’s Meaning (Matthew 5:27, 28) 3. Gave the Law’s Essence (Matthew 22:35-40) 1. Ipinakita ang Pananatili ng Kautusan (Mateo 5:17-18) 2. Pinalalim ang Kahulugan ng Kautusan (Mateo 5:27, 28) 3. Ibinigay ang Diwa ng Kautusan (Mateo 22:35-40)
The Law of God 1. Showed the Law’s Perpetuity Matthew 5:17, 18 NKJV “ ‘Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 1. “ (Mateo 5:17, 18).
1. Showed the Law’s Perpetuity Didn’t Change the Law When saying He had not come to “destroy” the law, Jesus is literally saying, I have not come to abolish the Ten Commandments. His statement is probably meant to show that it was the religious elders, not He, who had been destroying the law, reducing its effect through their tradition (see Matt. 15:3, 6).
1. Showed the Law’s Perpetuity Didn’t Change the Law In contrast, by filling it with a deeper meaning, Christ had come to “fulfill” the law, thus giving us an example of what perfect obedience to the will of God looks like. (See Rom. 8:3, 4.) It would be hard to find in the life and teachings of Jesus anything implying that the Ten Commandments are not binding on Christians.
has already committed adultery with her in his heart.’ ” The Law of God 2. Deepened the Law’s Meaning Matthew 5:27, 28 NKJV “ ‘You have heard that it was said to those of old, “You shall not commit adultery.” But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.’ ” 2. ” (Mateo 5:27, 28).
2. Deepened the Law’s Meaning The Seventh Commandment The rabbis cited tradition as their authority for their interpretation of the law. Christ spoke on His own authority, as the Lawgiver Himself. His teachings included the spirit behind the letter of the law. The spirit imparts meaning and life to what otherwise can only be pure formalism.
2. Deepened the Law’s Meaning The Seventh Commandment Adultery. Because of the tenth com-mandment, adultery would include lustful thoughts and desires, as well. Pluck eye, cut hand. Refers to the control of one’s thoughts and impulses; the importance of taking resolute decisions and actions toward guarding oneself against temptation and sin. Pangangalunya.
Divorce. Christ uplifted the sanctity and permanence of marriage: 2. Deepened the Law’s Meaning The Seventh Commandment Divorce. Christ uplifted the sanctity and permanence of marriage: the only cause for divorce, before God, is “sexual immorality” or “fornication” (in Greek porneia, literally “unchastity”). Diborsiyo.
2. Deepened the Law’s Meaning The Fifth Commandment Corban. “A gift.” When a man applied the words, “It is Corban” to anything, it was considered an oath: it was something dedicated to God and the temple. The Pharisees had found the perfect excuse to deny one’s parents their rightful support. Ang Ika-5 Utos. Corban. “Isang regalo.”
2. Deepened the Law’s Meaning The Fifth Commandment They had expanded the solid principles found in the Pentateuch and transformed them into man-made commandments, which, in their thinking, could supersede one of God’s commandments. “ ‘And In vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the command-ments of men’ ” (Matt. 15:9, NKJV).
hang all the Law and the Prophets.’ ” The Law of God 3. Gave the Law’s Essence Matthew 22:37-40 NKJV “ ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,...soul,...mind. ... You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.’ ” 3. ” (Mateo 22:37-40).
3. Gave the Law’s Essence Love God and Mankind Salvation from sin does not come from following the law. It comes, from the Lawgiver, the Savior. The Israelites had known this truth since the beginning, but they had forgotten it. Obedience and full surrender to God are so united that one without the other becomes only a pretense of Christian life.
The rabbis arrange all the command-ments by order of importance. 3. Gave the Law’s Essence Love God and Mankind The rabbis arrange all the command-ments by order of importance. If two commands appeared to be in conflict, the one assumed to be more important took priority and left a person free to violate the less important one.
3. Gave the Law’s Essence Love God and Mankind The Pharisees particularly exalted the first four precepts of the Decalogue as being more important than the last six and, as a result, they failed when it came to matters of practical religion. First, and most important, there must be love in the heart before anyone can begin to observe God’s law.
3. Gave the Law’s Essence Love God and Mankind Obedience without love is impossible and worthless. However, where there is true love toward God, a person will unconditionally put his life in harmony with God’s will as expressed in all ten of His commandments. That is why Jesus later said: “ ‘If you love Me, keep My commandments’ ” (John 14:15, NKJV).
The Law of God Final Words “His mission was to ‘magnify the law, and make it honorable.’ Isaiah 42:21. He was to show the spiritual nature of the law, to present its far-reaching principles, and to make plain its eternal obligation....” Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing 49. Huling Pananalita. Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing 49.
