GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles (Unit 2 – Human Resources)

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Starter What makes a good leader? List the characteristics of a good leader (Use the pen tool to write your ideas in the box below)

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Leaders can adopt different leadership “STYLES”. These different leadership styles have different effects on workers and if a manager adopts a SUITABLE leadership style it can really motivate staff to work hard! There are a number of different leadership styles, and in GCSE Business Studies we need to know about –AUTOCRATIC leaders and –DEMOCRATIC leaders

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Leadership Style 1 – “AUTOCRATIC” You MUST do as they say. They believe they know best. They make it clear to staff/ workers exactly what needs to be done. They do not give workers chance to make suggestions. ?

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Leadership Style 2 – “DEMOCRATIC” This style of leader believes decision making can be better if it is SHARED. They want to be seen as “fair”. They actively ask worker for ideas and suggestions. They believe in allowing workers and staff to develop by involving them in decisions about how to improve the business. ?

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Pupil Notes – AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP IS LIKE THIS (Make a note of each characteristic in each box using the pen tool….) ?

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Pupil Notes – DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP IS LIKE THIS (Make a note of each characteristic in each box using the pen tool….) ?

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Disadvantages Advantages AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP Match these advantages and disadvantages to the AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP style (Click and drag a note of each characteristic to a box)…. Gets things done quickly. Allows fast decision making. Might be good in crisis or emergency situations. Workers may feel secure because they just do as they are told – they don’t need to think for themselves! Could lead to staff wanting to leave the company if they feel they can’t make suggestions. Could be demotivating because workers are not given chance to express their ideas. Staff might feel they “do not matter” and are unimportant.

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Disadvantages Advantages Decision making will take longer. Not so suitable in crisis or emergency situations. Workers may feel more motivated as they can see THEIR ideas being used in the business! Could be demotivating if the leader / manager takes credit for the workers’ ideas. Staff may feel they are being “put upon” – if their boss is being PAID more money to be the manager or leader, LET THEM come up with the ideas if they are SO clever! DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP Match these advantages and disadvantages to the DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP style (Click and drag a note of each characteristic to a box….)

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Matching Leadership Styles to Different Types of Business …. Autocratic ? Democratic Manager of a Hair Salon Office Manager in the Human Resources Dept Head of Faculty in School Detective Inspector in the Police Senior Partner in a GP’s Practice A General in the British Army The Prime Minister at a Cabinet Meeting Managing Director of a medium sized company with 30 workers Drag and drop the examples below into the circles denoting the leadership styles

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles The Effects of Different Leadership Styles on how MOTIVATED staff feel What leadership style do I have? How motivated would you feel if you worked for me and why might you feel like this? I am the Office Manager in the Human Resources Department at a large company in town. There are 30 staff in our department, 25 of these have children of school age. There have been problems with staff all wanting to book holiday during the July and August period BUT that will leave the business without enough staff to operate the department properly (the business can only have 6 people out at any one time). I have decided to call a staff meeting and I have this suggestion for staff: They can EITHER agree at the meeting who has what dates … OR They can put in their holiday requests and people will get allocated dates on a first come first served basis.

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles The Effects of Different Leadership Styles on how MOTIVATED staff feel I am DCI Hunt of the Drugs Squad. This morning we are going to do a dawn raid of the home of a well known local drugs dealer. The armed police will go in first, as it is likely the offender will be armed. Along with the armed police, Frankie and Dylan the sniffer dogs will go in to the house in order to locate all the drugs. You lot will then follow me in to the house WHEN I GIVE THE ORDER. Make sure you ALL have your safety equipment on and meet back here, ready to go at 5am sharp. Any questions? What leadership style do I have? How motivated would you feel if you worked for me and why might you feel like this?

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Conclusions …. We’ve seen different styles of leadership: Would you say there is a “right” and a “wrong” way to lead people? Explain your ideas…

GCSE Business Studies Leadership Styles Written Task. Q.NAME and OUTLINE the features of Jamie’s leadership style.
