What is Business Intelligence? And What Does It Mean To My Practice?

Objectives 1. Describe terms, processes and benefits from using Business Intelligence in a medical practice setting. 2. Explain how a basic business intelligence model can be deployed with Centricity data using software the practice already owns. 1. Watch examples of Centricity Business Intelligence tools including Pivot Tables, , and dashboards.

Objective #1 Describe terms, processes and benefits from using Business Intelligence in a medical practice setting.

What is Business Intelligence? Competitive Intelligence = Competitive Advantage Use of “Big Data” Combining data from different systems YOUR Data & YOUR Decision Making Tools Not cookie cutter solutions Automated/Refreshed Data Tool for Managers & Staff

Business Intelligence Technology has improved and data storage costs are cheaper than ever and seem to be going down further. Its about competitive advantage through FOCUS. The tools make it easier for you to “see” the data and where you are today, where you were yesterday and predict where you are headed.

Business Intelligence  Reporting and Tools that improve business performance and by integrating previously disparate data to realize higher level decision-making and effectiveness in areas such as: Patient Care Cost Containment Customer Satisfaction Organizational Performance

Business Intelligence-Reporting Reduces number of reports you run Provides more information in a single report Less time generating reports Identify issues and act earlier

Business Intelligence - Tools BI Tools provide historical, current and predictive views of business operations Uses large amounts of data Allows for efficient and effective implementation of new strategies Helps identify and develop new opportunities

Business Intelligence - Tools Applying the BI concept to the end user can have the greatest ROI “Makes it easy for the staff to do the right thing” Can significantly reduce the amount of work and reduce opportunities for error in the first place

Business Intelligence Our practice experience thus far is mostly limited to EHR and PM data Future data sets for reporting include: Phone system data Time clock data General ledger/Accounts payable

Our Journey Wanted a crystal ball – but would have settled for anything better Wanted timely access to data without slowing down the system and re-running reports Wanted dashboards Wanted to know the trends Wanted to be alerted about the bad and the good operational and financial performance indicators Wanted to reduce backend work & re-work

Our Journey It became an enterprise-wide strategic initiative We’ve automated processes and error proofed many tasks Simplified reporting of data – less is more Cut down on data entry Improved the quality of our data We are always trying to manage key information for analytic purposes Increased evidence based decision making Developed a culture that values data more than ever

Objective #2 Explain how a basic business intelligence model can be deployed with Centricity data using software the practice already owns.

You’ll Need A commitment from the top down for efficiency The team: A consultant who understood our issues A D.B. Administrator (actually the IT team) Committed managers and staff Big dreamers looking for easier, better, faster

Tools SQL Server Report Server/Data Warehouse SQL Server Tools Analysis Services Integration Services Reporting Services Microsoft Excel Pivot Tables Charts Tables

Deployment Rather than starting with big data decided to start with smaller projects Improve some tools for middle managers and front end staff Small wins get the staff talking Small wins also get the staff thinking

Initial Projects Tracks providers locations and required exam rooms

Initial Projects (Slide Holder For Demo)

Initial Projects Users filter to analyze claims by payer and by provider

Objective #3 Watch examples of Centricity Business Intelligence tools including Pivot Tables, , and dashboards.

Our Results Created report file in our shared drive with various tables of data to allow managers to create their own reports on the fly Liberated us from many “custom reports” using the 3 rd party software Allows liberal use of Pivot Tables Customized to the employee’s role

Results This table tracks Patient A/R by Staff Responsible We also track the date of the patient’s next appointment

Results

Rather than a report that lists appeals to send:

What would you track if you could see future appointments?
