Nouns

General Nouns  person, place, thing, idea (concept)  Examples:  girl  city  shoe  love

Proper Nouns  specific nouns (usually give the noun a proper name)  (almost always starts with a capital letter)  Examples:  Kelly Clarkson  Chicago  Nike running shoe

Pronouns  can replace a noun or another pronoun = less repetitive sentences  Examples:  heshe  meit  theythem  weus II

Example Writing with Nouns  Susie is my best friend. Susie and I go everywhere together. Susie likes the same things I like. I really like hanging out with Susie.

Example Writing with Pronouns  Susie is my best friend. We go everywhere together. She likes the same things as me. I really like hanging out with her.

Class Activity Come up with different choices for the following underlined words (next three slides).  These choices are called synonyms.  A synonym is a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word.  A few have been completed for you.

Synonyms  Walk  creep  stroll  strut  saunter  run, sprint, jog  crawl  stride  stumble

Synonyms  Talk  scream  yell  sing  stammer  whisper  stutter  sign  stumble

Be verbs  NOT active = they do NOT show the actions of the sentence (be verbs are passive verbs).  is  am  are  was  were  be  being  been

Activity Change the following sentences by eliminating all be verbs. Also, make the sentences more specific. 1. The sun set while we were at the beach. 2. It’s okay; things will get better. 3. I told my parents I was staying at a friend’s house.
