Comparative and Superlative Adjectives Comparative and Superlative

Comparative Adjectives A comparative adjective compares only 2 nouns. When comparing 2 nouns add –er to the adjective. If the adjective is a long word, write more in front of it instead of adding –er to the end of the word.

Examples of Comparative Adjectives The mountain is tall. A mountain is taller than a hill. The view from a mountain is more beautiful than from a hill. Notice that tall adds –er because it is a short adjective. Notice that you add more in front of beautiful because it is a long adjective.

Superlative Adjectives A superlative adjective compares 3 or more nouns. When comparing 3 or more nouns, add –est to the adjective. If the adjective is a long word then write most in front of it instead of adding –est to the end.

Examples of Superlative Adjectives Denver is the highest city in the United States. Denver is the most amazing city we have ever seen. Notice that –est is added to high because it is a short adjective. Notice that most is added in front of amazing because it is a long adjective.

Exceptions to the Rules Some adjective have irregular forms of the words. Good or well, better, best Bad, worse, worst

Another Hint Say the word and ask yourself if it makes sense. .. Would you say something is “more well”? Would you say something is “amazingist”? Would you say something is “more bad”?
