Software Incubator

Real life innovative projects Intel Software Incubator A software incubator is a collaboration between intel and universities to propose mentoring and support for innovative student projects with a strong technical component (we’re intel after all). This program is currently available in Europe, MiddleEast, Africa, Russia. Why ? We want to detect and help the most innovative students projects. Professors want to propose real life projects with industry exchanges. Students want to experience what it’s like to manage a full project and work on a project that is worth spending countless hours working on it for a year or two.

What kind of innovation ? Innovation First the goal is to support innovation so the project idea has to be no less than mind blowing ! We’ll provide some ideas to help you start brainstorming, and we’ll exchange to help you find YOUR great idea. Hardware / Software Some project require a specific hardware or software to be deployed, tested or validated. We luckily have a vast area of mobile, server and embedded/robotics hardware dedicated to the incubators. So you are encouraged to target this hardware to have a chance to get our support. But if your project can be developed and tested without our lab hardware, like a web app, that’s even better. Using intel hardware/software at 100% is a key selection criteria. Major technologies : mobile on Win8/Android/Ubuntu/HTML5 HPC on Xeon PHI (240 threads)

What kind of projects ? Real world We’d like to support ideas that have a potential to be deployed in the real world. Because coding alone just “for the fun” is not as fun as getting input from users, thinking about market integration and seeing user actually use your creation to do something useful. After all, that’s how intel engineer work on a daily basis. Entrepreneurship Think like your want to create your service/software start-up based on this project at the end of the year. Even when you develop for free an open source software for a non governmental association, you have to think about who’s going to pay for the deployment, who’s going to maintain it, why users will really want to use it. That’s thinking like an entrepreneur !

What kind of method ? Project management Of course a real life project requires good project management. It means being able to write and submit a short project proposition, then developing a quick prototype to test the feasibility, then phasing your development to support an safe incremental development scenario, then presenting the final project to intel and your professors. Communication and User Interfaces Because engineers and researchers can’t afford to be only technicians anymore, basic communication about project progresses and final presentation are required. Note : A software without a decent User Interface and presentation has no chance to be successful nowadays.

What kind of support ? Hardware If your selected project requires a specific hardware, we can make the hardware available as a short term or long term loan to you or your university (mobile hardware), or test it remotely (servers, HPC). If several projects from the same university require the same hardware, it’s easier to dedicate the hardware to this university. 1-1 Mentoring We are frequently available (by or phone calls) to support the selected projects by 1-1 mentoring for all aspects of the project : brainstorming, technical problems, marketing, presentation, … Valorization, networking We frequently put the finished projects in contact with real life clients, write recommendation letters/linkedin for students, help students participate in conferences or other competitions (like MS Imagine Cup).

Process

Process - Initiation 1. Brainstorming Students brainstorm and propose projects descriptions. Intel is proposing a list of innovative project topics in strategic areas to help you find your own innovative idea, and is available during a weekly “ask an intel engineer” webconference to exchange about your ideas. Contact us as soon as possible with your ideas ! 2. Selection The most innovative projects are selected for personalized support from intel. Students with projects not selected for mentoring are welcome to attend our regular « ask an intel engineer » webconfs to ask questions and exchange about their projects.

Process - Development 3. Prototype Students start developing a prototype of their solution. We evaluate together the potential problems, bottleneck and potential. Adjustments to the project definition are made. 4. Support Selected projects benefit from a 1-1 support from an intel engineer on a best-effort basis (typically and a bi weekly short call). Students with projects not selected for mentoring are welcome to attend our regular « ask an intel engineer » webconfs to ask questions and exchange about their projects. Student continue developing their project.

Process - Logistics 5. Logistics If the project requires hardware to be shipped or accessed remotely, we’ll take care of the logistics (depending on availability) and legal paperwork. We currently have for student projects : Xeon PHI : 60 cores, 240 threads on a PCI card. For HPC fans ! Win8 Tablets : Win8 tablets with Win8 pro on intel atom. Perfect for advanced Win8 touch development. « Clovertrail » generation. Android Tablets and Phones : perfect for android on intel atom development. « Medfield » generation. Perceptual Cameras + SDK : us/vcsource/tools/perceptual-computing-sdkhttp://software.intel.com/en- us/vcsource/tools/perceptual-computing-sdk Ultrabooks : with touch screen. Perfect for Ubuntu or Win8 touch+keybaord development. Embedded : NUC (ultra compact and powerful PCs) Set-top-Boxes : « sodaville », the ultimate set-top-box. Perfect for low level video pipeline learning. Works with ubuntu and XBMC. Robotics : phidget USB controlled cards+motors. To be used from an intel android device or from a PC/tablet with ROS (Robotics on Linux)

Process – Evaluation 6. Evaluation We evaluate the finished project and give some feedback about the presentation, technical aspects of the project and development process. 7. Pedagogical integration If the professor mentoring the student projects would like to use the project to grade students, we’ll be happy to exchange on student project evaluation or participate to a jury. We think using the project as an official grade is clearly the best method to motivate students. 8. Follow-up Some projects will benefit from a follow-up : Would you like to put your project in production ? Create your start-up ? Contact clients ? Write a white paper together ? Participate in conferences ? We can probably help !
