THE WOMEN OF THE CRIMEAN WAR Florence Nightingale is famous being a nurse to British soldiers during the Crimean War. She greatly improved conditions in the hospitals making it less likely that they would catch infections. But was she the only person who helped?

Mary Seacole Born in Jamaica. Her mother taught her lots about medicine. She was an excellent nurse.

She heard that troops were dying in the Crimean War She also heard that conditions in the hospitals were terrible.

Mary travelled to London and offered to help. The British Army rejected her offer of help.

Mary used her own money to travel to the Crimea. Once there she went to see Florence Nightingale.

Mary used more of her own money to pay for medical treatment for the soldiers. She went onto the battlefield to treat wounded soldiers from both sides.

She returned to London famous for the great work she had done but very, very poor.

Who is it? In the 1936 Olympics he won 4 gold medals in the 100m, 200m, the long jump and the relay. Hitler did not want to salute him He was not invited to the White House to shake hands with the president and when he attended an awards ceremony in a hotel he had to go up in the service elevator and was not allowed to use the front door.
