Expository writing is defined as presenting reasons, explanations, or steps in a process. Since they are factual, they are written without emotion and usually written in the third person. The Function The function of the expository essay is to explain, or to demonstrating your own knowledge, or to enhance your reader’s understanding of a topic. Prompts for expository writing use words such as: explain, clarify, inform, describe.
