Vomano Project Stages 1 and 2 Andrea Castelletti Politecnico di Milano NMRP02 Provvidenza

Vomano Project The proposal The Vomano river basin is mainly used for hydropower production in the upper part and irrigation support downstream. The irrigated area currently served is about 7000 ha and is managed by the Consorzio Bonifica Nord (CBN). CBN would like to enlarge the cultivated surface and submitted an enlargement project to the water authority (WA), Regione Abruzzo. (Problem A). On the other side, environmentalists are pressing for MEF values to be fixed as soon as possible according to the Italian law. Rights for water exploitations are held by the power company and there is no way to revise them for at least the next 10 years. However, the WA can try to a gentleman agreement among the parties (Problem B).

Conflicts Demand Winter Spring Summer Autumn Hydropower Environment Irrigation

Environment MEF downstream from the interceptors withdrawals and on the main river branches Consequent reduction in the flow rate available for production and pumping. conflict vs. ENEL

Drinking water supply No deficit problems at present, maybe in the future. The aqueduct is buying water from the power company (against the Galli law) When the water is withdrawn from Piaganini there are quality problem and special treatments are required. conflict vs. ENEL

Hydropower production

Hydropowe4 production Cover water demand during peak hours Off/peak pumping conflict vs. Env./Irrigation/Drinking

Agricoltural production Water is bought in August Storage capacity is very limited Water pricing is based on irrigated surface and not on the actual consumption conflict vs. ENEL
