FILTERING MDP

Safety and Safety Gear  When filtering from a fermentation vessel you should never use carbon dioxide to push the beer through the filter, this can cause a potentially serious safety issue, instead use the pump to push the beer through the filter.  Sanitized rubber gloves  Water proof footwear  Protective eye wear

Assembling your filter  Make sure your filter plates are in the right order  Outside plates, dots should line up with filter inlet (see photo)  Outside plates, holes should be closest to out side wall (see photo)  All other plates should be every other, i.e. holes/no holes (see photo) Inlet Dot Holes

Assembling your filter (Cont.)  Install gaskets There are 3 different types of gaskets please refer to video for correct placement  Insert filter sheets in correct order, i.e. starting rough side facing out then smooth side, then rough again, etc. (see photo)

Assembling your filter (Cont.)  Press or tighten filter, (see photo 1)  Attach sight glass, (see video)  Attach all filter outlet screws, (see photo 2)  Attach filter port cap, (see photo 3) videoPhoto 1Photo 2Photo 3

Assembling your filter (Cont.)  Filtering from an FV  Connect a hose to the pump inlet leaving the other side unattached  Connect a hose to the pump outlet and the other side to the filter inlet  Connect a hose from the filter outlet leaving the other side unattached  Filtering from a TDV  Connect a hose to the Filter inlet leaving the other side unattached  Connect a hose to the Filter outlet leaving the other side unattached  NO PUMP IS NEEDED FOR TDV TO TDV FILTERING

Sanitizing the filter and all required equipment  Attach one sightglass to the 180 water outlet, then attach the hose inlet to the sight glass  Attach the other sightglass and a pressure gauge and to the outlet hose  Run 180 degree water through your filter for 30 min  Adjust all valves and outlets until you get a trickle of water from each  Put the following items in a bucket of sanitizer  TDV sample port with small black gasket  Carbonation stone with black gasket and clamp

Filtering  -Source FV preparation  If filtering from a F.V. drain the yeast from both bottom valves. There should be no pressure gauge attached to the FV during filtration.  Connect a sightglass to the standpipe outlet of the FV, connect a hose from the sightgass to pump inlet  Connect your filter outlet hose to a sight glass at the bottom of your destination TDV  This outlet valvue on the filter should be closed

Filtering (Cont.)  - Source TDV preparation  If Filtering from a TDV, Connect the hose from sightglass on source vessel to the filter inlet  Connect your filter outlet hose to a sight glass at the bottom of your destination TDV  This outlet value on the filter should be closed  -Destination TDV preparation  Attach a carbonation stone to your destination TDV  Attach a sample port to your destination TDV

Filtering (Cont.)  -CO2 push  Attach a CO 2 line to the sight glass on your source vessel  Make sure the value on the filter inlet is open and the filter outlet is closed  The vents on the filter should be open when the CO 2 is first started to be run  Run CO 2 through the filter until you get CO 2 coming out each vent valve of the filter  Close each vent as gas instead of water runs from each.  Once you have CO 2 throughout the filter, you may then open the outlet valve of the filter and proceed to push CO 2 through the hose into your source vessel creating a CO 2 full environment.  Run CO 2 through the carbonation stone to help flush the air out of the TDV until you can smell the CO 2 coming out the sidearm of the TDV.  Once your CO 2 base is set in your destination vessel, turn off the CO 2 on your source vessel sightglass.  Shut the outlet valve on your filter and the bottom valve on your source vessel (this valve controls the flow of beer into your destination vessel).

Filtering (Cont.)  -Beer push from FV  Open the valve at the base of your source vessel  Open the inlet valve on the filter  Open all vent valves on the filter. As water is replaced by beer at each vent valve close the vent.  When beer rather than water is flowing from the final vent by the sightglass, open the outlet valve  Then using the bottom valve control the flow of beer into the destination TDV  Watch your flow rate into the T.D.V. if your flow rate is low, increase the pump a little. You should be creating waves, not bubbles, when beginning the flow of beer into the destination vessel

Filtering (Cont.)  Beer push from a TDV  Begin your filter with no pressure attached to your TDV (the weight of the beer will start this process for you ).  Open the valve at the base of your source vessel  Attach a CO 2 line to the pressure gauge on your source TDV and keep closed for the beginning of the filter  Open the inlet valve on the filter  Open all vent valves on the filter. As water is replaced by beer at each vent valve close the vent.  When beer rather than water is flowing from the final vent by the sightglass, open the outlet valve  Then using the bottom valve control the flow of beer into the destination TDV  Watch your flow rate into the T.D.V. if your flow rate is low, turn on the CO2 on your source TDV to give your flow more pressure. You should be creating waves, not bubbles, when beginning the flow of beer into the destination vessel

Filtering (Cont.)  -Trouble shooting  Back flushing If increasing pressure does not work you will probably have to back flush the filter. To do this, first flush all beer out of the filter into your destination using water. Then relieve pressure on filter, Connect the hose from your destination vessel to the hot water outlet. Disconnect the hose from the unfiltered TDV and direct this hose towards your drain. Run water backwards through the filter to wash the yeast off the plates. Open your vents. Once the water is running clear you can begin the filtration from step one of either beer push

Filtering (Cont.)  -Finishing  When you see beer is no longer running out the base of the FV/TDV. Close all valves  Connect your hose to the water line  Open up all valves  Flush out the remaining beer until it reaches the destination T.D.V.  Attach a pressure gauge to the source vessel and put 15 psi of CO2 head pressure in it

Clean up  Relieve the pressure on the filter and back flush the filter  Start you next filtration by setting the CO2 base once again as stated above, or remove filter pads and clean the filter. Do not try to store pads for future reuse in the filter, this will only lead to mold, infected, or odd tasting beer.  Remove all filter pads and throw away outside at trash dump immediately.  Remove all gaskets, sightglass and vent valves and soak in caustic for 24 hrs. Brush clean all ports on filter.  Scrub each plate with Hot water and Pronto or X Puma, remove all gaskets and soak in caustic for 24 hours. Take the sightglass apart and scrub.  Every month as per the maintenance log put the filter plates through dish. Please make sure you do this with fresh water in the dish machine. If you are doing the maintenance after a Lager filtration, the plates should be scrubbed clean and rinsed, then put through dish.
