Task Force-7 Engine 14 Engine 13 Batt. 2 RELAY PUMPING Task Force-7 Engine 14 Engine 13 Batt. 2
Dual Pumping In a dual pumping operation, two pumpers are connected intake to intake in order to take advantage of an excellent water source.
Tandem Pumping In tandem pumping, the engine connected to the supply source discharges water into the intake of the second engine.
I. Definition: The process of using two or more pumpers to move water through hoselines over a long distance by operating the pumpers in series.
A. Constant Pressure {Equal Distance Method}
Constant Pressure 1. Each pumper lays same amount 2. 1000 ft. is common distance 3. 175 psi E.P. 4. Attack pumper - constant flow 5. Attack pumper - dump line
B. Advantages
B. Advantages 1. No guess work in placement 2. Minimal calculations {hydraulics} 3. Fewer pumpers needed
C. Relay Operating Procedures
C. Relay Operating Procedures {Source & Relay Pumpers} 1. Source pumper gets water 2. Relay pumper prepares for water 3. Source pumper opens discharge 4. Relay pumper engages pump 5. Relay advances throttle to 175 psi 6. All relays maintain 20 -50 psi residual 7. Each pumper duplicates these steps
D. Relay Operating Procedures {Attack Engine}
D. Relay Operating Procedures {Attack Engine} 1. Establish discharge pressure [N.P.] 2. All pumpers then set relief valves 3. Cavatation prevention
E. Shutdown Procedures 1. Attack engine shuts down first 2. Shutdown in reverse procedure 3. Water is allowed to discharge through dump line 4. Each pumper in line follows reverse shutdown procedure
F. Communications
F. Communications Like all other fireground operations, good communications are vital to relay pumping.
F. Communications Separate radio channel early on. I.C. / Operations Needs to be modified to suit A.F.D.
