TC100 1 Energy saving system for home appliances and home network devices - Part 1 : Architecture and requirements Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) Kwang-Soon Choi

TC100 2 Proposals Energy saving system (ESS) for home appliances and home network devices Part 1 - Architecture and requirements Part 2 - …… Part 3 - …… Technical specifications

TC100 3 Scope & Purpose  Scope  Architecture of Energy Saving System (ESS) Conceptual model of ESS Basic architecture of ESS  Requirements ESS client ESS server ESS server-compatible home appliance  Purpose -In order to provide consumers -With energy monitoring functions to make them aware how much electric energy they are consuming -And with Intelligent energy saving functions to cut off passive and active standby power that consumers are not aware of

TC100 4 Conceptual Model (1) ESS Server No new wire networking ESS Client #1 ESS Client #2 ESS Client #n Appliance #1 Appliance #2 Appliance #n Electric Power ESS Client #n+1 Energy Saving System (ESS) 1. Mainly composed of one ESS server and one or more ESS clients 2. Two possible models : ESS model 1 (ESS server-free) and 2

TC100 5 ESS model 1 Functions of ESS model 1 (1) Detection of passive standby power mode of appliances (2) Cut-off of passive standby power automatically ESS model 1 (ESS server-free model) ESS Client #1 ESS Client #2 ESS Client #n Appliance #1 Appliance #2 Appliance #n Electric Power Energy Saving System (ESS) Self power consumption < 0.2 W

TC100 6 ESS model 2 (1) ESS Server No new wire networking ESS Client #1 ESS Client #2 ESS Client #n Appliance #1 Appliance #2 Appliance #n Electric Power ESS Client #n+1 Energy Saving System (ESS) Functions of ESS model 2 (1) Functions of ESS model 1 (2) Detection of active standby power mode of appliances (3) Saving and restoration of context (network configurations, etc.) of appliances (4) Cut-off of active standby power of home network devices (except home gateway, home server, home security, etc.) (5) Monitoring of energy consumption status (optional function) Self power consumption < 0.5 W

TC100 7 ESS model 2 (2) Functions of ESS model 2 = Functions of ESS model 1 + additional functions Addition functions of ESS model 2 Detection of active standby power mode of appliances Cut-off of active standby power Monitoring of energy consumption status (optional function) Feasible types a stand-alone system functional modules that can be implemented into legacy home gateway (or home server) Requirements related to Functions of appliances, ESS clients and ESS server Saving of context of an appliance before cutting off its supply of electric power Restoration of context of an appliance after supplying electric power Simple communication protocol for power-monitoring and power-control between ESS clients and server

TC100 8 Functions and Classification (1) 1)Appliance  Supporting devices Legacy home appliances and legacy home network devices  ESS clients cut off only passive standby power of legacy devices. New home network devices which meet this specification  ESS server and clients cut off both of passive and active standby power. 2)ESS Clients  Functions Function 1 : Cut off the supply of electric power by itself or an ESS server Function 2 : Detect passive standby power mode of appliances connected to it Function 3 : Detect active standby power mode of appliances connected to it Function 4 : Calculate (or measure) the amount of consumed power (or electric current and voltage) and send result to ESS server  Classes Class 1 : ESS clients which meet Function 1 and 2 above (for ESS model 1) Class 2 : ESS clients which meet Function 1, 2 and 3 above (for ESS model 2) Class 3 : ESS clients which meet Function 1, 2, 3 and 4 above (for ESS model 2)  Feasible Types Type 1 : outlet type (for legacy devices) Type 2 : adaptor type (for legacy devices) Type 3 : new devices with a built-in ESS client

TC100 9 Functions and Classification (2) 3) ESS server  Functions Communication Function  Be notified the active standby power mode of appliances  Send control commands to ESS clients in order to cut off the supply of electric power  Send query commands to ESS clients in order to monitor the power consumption status of appliances Monitoring function  Build DB by using data from ESS clients  Query functions (with device name or ESS client ID)  Display total amount of power consumed during a specific period Energy saving function  Cut off active standby power consumed by home network devices User-configurable interface and alarm service  Feasible Types Type 1 : stand-alone type (no connection to home server or home gateway) Type 2 : stand-alone type, but it is interoperable with home server or home gateway Type 3 : home server or home gateway type (can be implemented as additional functions of home gateway (or home server))
