Presentation transcript:

Online Searching, 4 th ed. Chapter 7 WorldCat Search Examples 3 & 4: Finding Materials by Genre Finding Materials on a Current Topic pp. 141 – 142 Librarian’s Guide to Cultivating Database Skills for Research and Instruction

Search 3: Finding mysteries with a science fiction theme (remember: Advanced Search)

Again, a pretty large number – and variety of formats! – in the results: This one leads the list (at the moment of creating this PPT) – from Wait, remember the default sort order for WorldCat results is by number of libraries that own the item – not by date.

Search 4: Finding nonfiction materials on global warming that have been published recently. Back to the Search interface (advanced) – might be safest to just “Clear” the previous search, that way we know we’re starting fresh. Is the phrase ‘global warming’ a Subject heading? Yes! Click to paste it into the search. Note: I simply typed in: global warming WorldCat supplied the quotes when I changed the Indexed in: field to Subject Phrase.

Our search is ready to run…

(So many formats we need two screensnips!) Aside: what an excellent title to lead the list. This is obviously a must- have for every library (I mean, “global weirdness” – how great is that?!); it delights me that so many libraries agree!
